You can come to Montevideo by plane; the Carrasco International Airport is not situated in Montevideo, but it is quite close; there are some international flight that arrives here directly , but most of them have connections with Buenos Aires (Argentina) or Sao Paulo (Brazil).

Well, the gateway to South America when you are this far south, for US passengers, is frankly Buenos Aires.... so many flights will fly you to BA, and then will go onward to MVD. Such is the case for me. I chose to continue on the UA flight that landed MIA- EZE, and then EZE - MVD.

The flight one way, EZE-MVD, was $68.00USD. Worth it... because the one way Ferry ride is the same, but since I would have had to take time / money to commute to Port, it was cheaper, shorter to fly from EZE....

Quick flight too.... and the Airport at MVD is small and managible even if you don't speak Spanish.

    Very interesting!

A three-hour ride from the Darsena Norte terminal in BsAs brings you here to the heart of Montevideo. It is cheaper to take the one-hour boat to Colonia and then connect by bus (same amount of time however), but there is something much more magical about approaching or leaving Montevideo by water. Watch as you leave the brown waters around BsAs and you will see them take on the more steel grey of the open sea as you get close to Montevideo. Magic? You can fly, but why when you can buquebus it?

It is good to be an hour early for all departures - whether to and fro Montevideo, BsAs or Colonia as you have to do pass immigration before boarding the boat.

An added treat for those of you sailors - the Uruguayan fleet is docked opposite the Buquebus terminal.

When arriving by cruiseship you will be docked just a few meters from the centre of the old part of Montevideo, in walking-distance to most of the buildings that are of interest for the tourists. Even the biggest ships will be able to dock there, when walking to town dont miss to take a look at the anchor of the german WW II - battleship "Admiral Graf Spee" and when you are interested in a traditional tall ship, walk a little further behind the admiralty-building in order to see the sailing-school-ship of the army of Urugua.

Taxi is a good and not very expensive way to go around Montevideo; the cars are easily recognizable (painted in black and yellow, with a light sign with the word "TAXI" on the top!!!) and you can get them at the street, at the "taxi stops" or call them by phone. The cars have taximeter, so you will pay what the machine registers. The costs are higher during the night and on weekends. As usual, the Montevidean taxi drivers are also psychologists, politicians, soccer coachs, meteorologists, so you can talk with them about a lot of points.

There is a quick and nice way to come to Montevideo if you are in Buenos Aires: by ferry. Buqubus is the company that makes this trips, from port to port, in very comfortable ships. The same company has a cheaper service: from Buenos Aires to Colonia by ferry, and thern, from Colonia to Montevideo by bus.

Buses are a good way to get around Montevideo. They are safe, clean and they pass pretty often so you won't be waiting that much. Just to give you an idea a bus may pass every 5 to 25 minutes depending on the time and place where you are (at late night times change and you may have to wait longer).
When taking a bus you will have to pay a fee which is in general cheap (about 60 cents of us dollar), you should tell the driver where you want to go and he will give you your ticket. If you are not sure where to get out of the bus you should try telling the driver (in spanish, otherwise he won't understand) and he will tell you when you got to the place you wanna go.

Taxis are available throughout Montevideo. They are cheap and safe. If you want to take a cab just extend your hand and it will stop right besides you.
There are also some taxi checkpoints in the city, you may want to know where these are near your hotel. Don't arrange a fee before taking the cab, just wait for the meter to tell you the price. Tipping is not expected but if you want to do it it's ok.

  • If you need to book tickets on Buquebus, you don't need to go to their terminal at the port. Ferryturismo has a large office downtown at Av Rio Negro y Colonia. They sell ferry tickets, bus tickets, city tours, hotel bookings, etc. Very handy if you are in downtown. One way ticket to BA was $54 each. This was several dollars cheaper than the peso price. Dont know why. Trip took a bit over 3 hours.
When you leave Uruguay from the Buquebus terminal, you will have to pay a tax of $8.00USD per person. A taxi from our downtown hotel to the port was 70P/$2.80USD.
You can buy food to take with you on the ferry at the upstairs waiting area. A decent sandwich cost 30P/$1.20. There is food/drink onboard the ferry.

Well, Andrea and I TRIED about 3 times perhaps to take a bus, but each time we ended up hailing cabs. Probably because it was a Sunday and the cabs were simply non-existent! How sad... I really wanted to ride the bus for local flavah and all, but when time is limited, it's time to cab it... and they weren't too expensive at all. They seem to be just about everywhere and you aren't too likely to be screwed either... Very interesting!
