Torres Garcia mural graces a wall on high by mtncorg The heart of Montevideo is easy to walk around about. As you do, keep your eyes open as surprises await on each street. Here is but one small example, high on a wall near Garcia's museum - a bit of his work for all to see. Leave a Comment

This old steam-boat found its "final drydock" at the entrance to the port of Montevideo, nice to look at and lighted at night, so it is some sort of a lighthouse as well, dont miss it, when approaching the port by cruiseship. You will find this great ship opposite of the mountain that gave Montevideo its name (see my 4th pic!) Leave a Comment

Capitan Miranda is obviously the sailing - school-ship for the navy of Uruguay and it will mostly be docked close to the Admirality-building. No problem to approach it and take photographs, several officers had been watching me taking these pics. It was interesting to see a combination of an old wooden ship, certainly more than 100 years old and modern masts made of aluminium, radar etc. Leave a Comment

In the port of Montevideo, at the same place as the anchor of the battleship "Admiral Graf Spee" you will see some old machineries like this old steam-powerded crane as well as a lot more anchors and other remains from old ships. It is a nice place for ships-enthousiasts like me and another good argument not to take one of the many free shuttle-buses that offer you to take you to the city (and mainly to shops selling leather-goods there) Leave a Comment

It was nice to see at least these interesting remains of a building obviously dating back to the year 1890, according to the inscription on top of it. Its name is Banco Ingles de Rio de Janeiro / English Bank of Rio de Janeiro. You will see plenty of such buildings in Montevideo, where only the facade was left over, obviously waiting for better times and the money in order to restore it and integrate it into a new building. The adress of this building is Zabaala 1486, just a few steps from Iglesia de San Francisco Leave a Comment

This building in the port of Montevideo is the admirality. The architecture was not really so very special, but it was interesting to see some exhibits around the car-park-area of that naval building : old anchors, cannons, ship-screws, whaling-harpoons and a lot more. This building is in an area, where only passengers of cruise-ships are allowed to enter, the controls at the gate of the port are quite severe, so have your boarding-pass ready ! Opposite of the admirality you will find Captan Maranda, the sailing - school-ship of the navy of Uruguay. Leave a Comment

Uruguay Club is the name of this interesting building next to the cathedral Iglesia Matriz. The building dates back to the year 1885 and all you can see of it as a tourist is the beautiful ornate facade. There are several cafes with terraces at "Plaza Constitucion", from where you will be able to see this lovely building. Dont miss this building, when you are at "Plaza Constitucion" , the adress of Urugua Club is : Sarandi 584 Leave a Comment

From the lighthouse by andal13 Punta Brava o Punta de las Carretas (Rough Point or Carts Point) is the Southest point of the Uruguayan coast; at the end it has a lighthouse, which can be visited; the entrance fee is 0,50 U$S; from the top, the sights are awesome. Althought Punta Carretas is a nice and well known place, close to one of the most fashion areas of the city, it is not common for Montevidean people to visit the lighthouse; the point, however, is full of fishermen under the sunlight, and full of lovers under the moonlight! Castillo Pittamiglio by andal13 Among dozens of new and modern buildings, at the seaside, you can find an odd construction: El castillo Pittamiglio (Pittamiglio Castle). It is not a real castle, but a strange house easily recognizable by the Victory of Samothraki it has at the frontage. The "castle" was built at early 20th century by Humberto Pittamiglio, an architect and alchemist. The house is full of mystery, hidden charms and strange rooms; it houses the Asociación de Promotores Privados de la Construcción (an association), a cultural center and museum. You can visit this building with a guided tour.
