One med. / large roll away, but that depends on how long you will be, naturally...

WINTER: Turtle necks, sweaters, scarf, gloves, hat, umbrella, good walking shoes... (Notice in the photo. Sweater is NICE! Short sleeve dress of mine is STUPID! I was cold!)

You can bring everything, or you can by pretty much anything there, cheaper than US too. I like my own brands, so I brought my own, and supplimented w/ bargains while there.

Hey, I'm all Digi at this point. Just make sure you bring enough charged batteries and/or pack a transformer so you can re-charge while on your trip.

    wouldn't know... yikes!

Be sure to pack a bag so that you can bring things back home. I only wish I had enough space for wine!

  • You can exchange your american $ easily at the Cambios or the hotels. However, the hotel would not exchange my traveler's cheques. My understanding is that traveler's cheques are less and less accepted there. When I was there the exchange rate was 1USD=13$Uy. The travel guide I used include: 'Lonely Planet, Buenos Aires', and 'Lonely Planet, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.' I found them useful generally but in terms of 'night life' in Montevideo the Lonely Planets were out of date. Montevideo had a lot more night life to offer than discussed in the tour books. I definitely would go back there just to hang out in clubs and dance til dawn.

  • If there's one thing I've learnt by living in this city it's that no matter how hot it is you should always have a swater with you. This is cause even if it's over 30 °C the temperatures always drop when the evening comes, specially if you are near the sea.

  • Luggage And Bags: Bring a lot less luggage than you usually do. Laundries are on every corner and they are very inexpensive, about $3 US for a whole washer load. They'll usually have clothes ready the same day. Since Montevideo is a very casual city (shorts and flip-flops), you don't need much in the way of fancy dress. Bring comfortable clothes and do a load of laundry every few days. it will make your life much easier than hauling large suitcases filled with clothes you don't need.

Miscellaneous: Montevideo is a great city and Uruguay is a terrific country, but one thing they don't get is "picante." They love pizza, but don't have any dry chile peppers to spice it up. They have tons of delicious empanadas and meats, but only have timid chimichurri sauces to titillate the taste buds. Bring a small bag of dried red chile flakes and a small tube of Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce. Use them surrepticiously if you must, but you'll be glad you have them with you.
