    "Bar 62" takes its name from the first trolley bus line inaugurated in Montevideo; this place is one of the "historical" bars of the city. The place is very cosy and well decorated; it also has a barbecue. The staff is really nice, and the music is great. During Saturday nights, the atmosphere is unique.

    "Bar 62" toma su nombre de la primera línea de trolebús inaugurada en Montevideo; este sitio es uno de los bares "históricos" de la ciudad. El lugar es muy acogedor y bien decorado; también tiene parrillada. El personal es realmente amable y la música es excelente. Los sábados a la noche el ambiente es espectacular.

    I ate a "picada del mar al champagne" (seafood nibbles cooked with champagne), pear tart with almonds and icecream, and an excellent Tannat (red wine); we were invited with a glass of lemoncello (lemmon liqueur); everything was delicious.

    Comí una "picada del mar al champagne", tarta de peras con almendras y helado, y un excelente Tannat (vino tinto); fuimos invitadas con una copa de lemoncello (licor de limón); todo estuvo delicioso.

    Mercado del Puerto is such a wonderful place to taste local specialities, just follow the great smells and take a seat directely at the food-stands or out in the garden-restaurants.
    What a pity that I had a bad stomach in Montevideo, "Montezuma's revenge" had caught me 2 days before we came to Montevideo, I had to skip Buenos Aires but here I could at least do some walking again.

    Take a look at my last photograph : that is a kind of ham that will be cut directely from that large piece, it was interesting to watch how they did it !

    All the typical food like the famous "chivito" which means "littlegoat" but is a egg-topped steak sandwich with salad, french fries.
    Special service for the coffee: comes with orange juice and separated whipped cream

    The coffee service comes like in an old Viennese caf?: with a glass of freshly pressed orange juice, whipped cream separated, glass of water and excellent cake plus a candy.

    The tale says that the seventh son of a family (with no daughters between) on Friday nights becomes a wolf... ("lobizon"). El Lobizon is the name of a famous restaurant, situated at the basement of an old house; small tables, thistle chairs, half-light and soft music, make this place very special.

    Dice la leyenda que el séptimo hijo varón de una familia (sin niñas en medio) los viernes de noche se transforma en lobizón... "El Lobizón" es el nombre de un famoso restaurante, situado en el sótano de una vieja casona; mesitas, sillas de cardo, penumbra y música suave hacen de éste un lugar muy especial.

    The most famous dish here is the gramajo (scrambled eggs with fries, onions and ham), and I highly recommend pollo al ajillo (chicken with garlic); the sangria is a "must" as well.

    El plato más famoso es el gramajo (revuelto de huevos, papas, cebollas y jamón), y yo recomiendo calurosamente el pollo al ajillo; la sangría es un clásico del local.

    We didn't set out to go here, it was a place that seemed crowded enough to be good, but not so jammed packed that we couldn't sit down.

    It was sooooooooooo good.

    Meat. Got to order the meat. Had some special rolled beef thing, stuffed with cheese and olives, etc. Great chorizo, and provolenata (grilled cheese). Fine local house wine. Fine and cheap.

    El Callejón (The lane) is a quite new restaurant and pub situated at Ciudad Vieja; small, cosy, with furniture of dark wood, very gentle staff, excellent music, it is a nice place for a friendly or business lunch; during the nights it is also a pub.

    El Callejón es un restaurante y pub bastante nuevo situado en la Ciudad Vieja; pequeño, acogedor, con muebles de madera oscura, personal muy amable, excelente música, es un buen lugar para un almuerzo de negocios o con amigos; duarnte la noche funciona como pub.

    We chose the "executive menu"; that day was antipasto, fish with vegetables, and icecream; everything was just right.

    Elegimos el "manú ejecutivo"; ese día era antipasto, pescado con vegetales, y helado; todo estuvo muy bien.

    "Chez Piñeiro" is a traditional bar-restaurant; it has been reconditioned lately. It is the typical Montevidean bar, unassuming, cozy, with a very gentle staff and simple food.

    "Chez Piñeiro" es un bar-restaurante tradicional; ha sido reacondicionado en los últimos años. Es el típico bar montevideano, sin pretenciones, acogedor, con un personal amable y comida sencilla.

    The most famous dish here is the pizza and the fainá, but I recommend the chivito canadiense. What is this? "Chivito" is the most typical Uruguayan sandwich, wiht meat, Canadian loin, mozzarella cheese, tomato, lettuce, eggs and potatoe chips.

    La comida más famosa aquí es la pizza y el fainá, pero recomiendo el chivito canadiense. ¿Qué es esto? "Chivito" es el emparedado uruguayo más típico, con carne, lomito canadiense, queso mozzarella, tomate, lechuga, huevos y papas fritas.

    La Cigale is the name of a chain of ice cream restaurants; there you can taste the best ice cream of the world (or even the Universe!)

    La Cigale es el nombre de una cadena de heladerías; allí pueden degustar el mejor helado del mundo (¡o incluso del universo!)

    I am quite classical (in a matter of ice crams!), so usually I ask for the same flavours... My favourite one is manjar de nuez.

    Soy bastante clásica (¡en lo que a helados se refiere!) así que habitualmente pido los mismos sabores... Mi favorito es el de manjar de nuez.

    If you ask any Montevidean for the most typical restaurant, probably the answer is "La Pasiva".
    "La Pasiva" is the name of a chain of restaurants; there are several "Pasivas" in Montevideo and other cities in Uruguay. They are popular, nice and unassuming restaurants.
    The picture does not show La Pasiva, but the blue sunshades belong to one of this restaurants (at Sarandi St.)

    Si le preguntan a cualquier montevideano por el restaurante más típico, probablemente la respuesta sea "La Pasiva".
    "La Pasiva" es el nombre de una cadena de restaurantes; hay numerosas "Pasivas" en Montevideo y otras ciudades del Uruguay. Se trata de restaurantes populares, lindos y sin pretensiones.
    La foto no muestra La Pasica, pero las sombrillas azules pertenecen a uno de estos restaurantes (en la calle Sarandí).

    The menu is assorted, but the most typical and famous dishes are the "panchos" (hot dogs).

    El menú es variado, pero el plato más típico y famoso lo constituyen los "panchos" (salchichas).

    "Rufffino" is a small and cozy restaurant, with the typical checkered red and white tableclothes, dark woods, and a nice staff.
    If you have to wait for a free table, you will be invited with a glass of sangría.

    "Ruffino" es un restaurante pequeño y acogedor, con típicos manteles a cuadros rojos y blancos, maderas oscuras y un personal amable.
    Si deben esperar mesa libre, serán invitados con una copa de sangría.

    Pasta and pizza fatto in casa.
    If you want a "staid" lunch or dinner, may be "Sorrentinos Alfredo", with a good red wine (Tannat, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot); for an informal occasion, may be a pizza "4 staggioni" (my favourite); as dessert, icecream or the most delicious "profiteroli" of the world.

    Si desean un almuerzo o cena formal, pueden ser unos "Sorrentinos Alfredo", con un buen vino tinto (Tannat, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot); para una ocasión informa, puede ser una pizza "4 staggioni" (mi preferida); como postre, helados o los más deliciosos "profiteroli" del mundo.
