El Callejón, Montevideo

Ok, anyone who has to have a fancy, pricey, restaurant, don't waste your time reading this. Pizza Roni is your classic, dark, hole in the wall, stone oven pizza place. There are probably three tables. The food is wonderful, however, and best of all......Ricardo is there. With only a little encouragement, Ricardo, (a waiter and delivery man), will give you the benefit of his 15 years of training as a classical guitarist. We were absolutely stunned at his talent, and asked him "What are you doing working here??" He replied that in Uruguay there is little opportunity. "We have doctors driving cabs", He said.

Really, this is for people who enjoy authentic, rustic Uruguay. If you do, I promise you will enjoy both the food, and Ricardo, (who actually doesn't know how amazing he is). A picture of Ricardo is provided. The restaurant is in Pocitos, at Luis de la Torre 643, at the corner of 21 de Septiembre.

Favorite Dish: Pizza Roni, a "combo", the Empanadas, Faina. Two very good meals cost about $10, including the tip.

El Callejón (The lane) is a quite new restaurant and pub situated at Ciudad Vieja; small, cosy, with furniture of dark wood, very gentle staff, excellent music, it is a nice place for a friendly or business lunch; during the nights it is also a pub.

El Callejón es un restaurante y pub bastante nuevo situado en la Ciudad Vieja; pequeño, acogedor, con muebles de madera oscura, personal muy amable, excelente música, es un buen lugar para un almuerzo de negocios o con amigos; duarnte la noche funciona como pub.

Favorite Dish: We chose the "executive menu"; that day was antipasto, fish with vegetables, and icecream; everything was just right.
