In the street taking you from the cruise-port to Puerta de la Ciudadela and to Plaza Indenpendencia you will find lots of souvenir-stands, mainly the kind of stuff made especially for tourists, nothing special but good enough for the hasty tourist who does not want to waste his time at the much better souvenir-market opposite of the cathedral . Another kind of flea market takes place at Plaza Matriz (Matriz Square, Old City) on Saturday mornings; there you cand find antiques.
Es un mercado abierto que tiene lugar los domingos de mañana en la calle Tristán Narvaja. Es un mercado de pulgas, y allí se pueden encontrar antigüedades, discos viejos (desde Gardel hasta los Beatles), libros viejos, mascotas, plantas, lentes de sol, o incluso dentaduras postizas! Otro tipo de mercado de pulgas se lleva a cabo en la Plaza Matriz los sábados de mañana; aquí se pueden encontrar antigüedades. For a different food experience you should head for the Ciudad Vieja's Mercado del Puerto. Inside this ornate building that once was a train station, market stalls have been converted into parrillas and seafood restaurants with exterior sidewalk seating as well. Many of the establishments have proper tables, but many visitors prefer sitting on a stool facing the grill for an up-close view of the action. Saturdays and specially sundays (more people there), Montevideo downtown´s streets get overcrowded with REAL GOOD bargains, specially on antiques. I myself bought 2 old picture cameras (one of them 90 years old!) at a very, very low price (needed a lot of talking to the seller in order to fix a low price). For those of you from Buenos Aires knowing Palermo shops, this flea market it´s quite the same, but still at lower prices. Leave a Comment Address: Montevideo downtown
