Argentina is famous for its meat, especially its huge, delicious steaks, and while travelling through that country over 3 months we sampled many delicious examples. But the best steak we tasted in South America was not in Argentina, but in Uruguay, in a small restaurant in Salto. We only found the place by accident on a Sunday where the other restaurant we'd been at the first two nights was closed.
It wasn't in any guide book, and I don't remember the name, but it was close to Hotel Concordia on Calle Uruguay. We weren't expecting too much from it, it was very much a locals place and the prices were mid range. But the steak was so good. Tender, tasty and delicious, it almost melted in my mouth.
Not too many tourists visit northern Uruguay so there aren't as many restaurants as you might expect in a city the size of Salto. Most of the best ones are in the centre, on Calle Uruguay between the two main squares. For our first two nights in town we ate at La Trattoria, opposite Hotel Concordia. There is a good selection on the menu here and the chivito (sliced beef sandwiches) and pizzas are especially good value.
Connected to the Termas del Dayman is a fantastic restaurant which was not too expensive. It seems to be one of the most popular places to eat in town.
