Tacuarembó Things to Do

Probably most of you know the tango singer Carlos Gardel, one of the most popular artists of the first half of 20th century. He lived in Buenos Aires (Argentina), where he became famous, and died in Medellin (Colombia) in a plane crash. Some people think he was born in France, but some documents proof he was born in Tacuarembo, at the place named "Valle Eden" (Eden Valley) situated 28 Km (about 17 miles) far from the city. His parents were Colonel Carlos Escayola, a rich and poweful man, and Maria Lelia Oliva, who was at that time his sister-in-law, and subsequently would become his third wife (Escayola was married to the three sisters Oiva!) When Maria Lelia gave birth to her son, the baby was given to one of the maids, the French Berthe Gardes, who took the baby to Buenos Aires, and brought up the boy as her own son.
Nowadays, there is a Museum of Gardel in Valle Eden; the place deserves a visit, not only for Gardel, but the beautiful natural environment.

Probabemente la mayoría de ustedes conoce al cantante de tango Carlos Gardel, uno de los artistas más populares de la primera mitad del siglo XX. Vivó en Buenos Aires (Argentina), en donde alcanzó la fama, y falleció en Medellín (Colombia) en un accidente aéreo.
Algunas personas creeb que nació en Francia, pero algunos documentos prueban que nació en Tacuarembó, en el lugar conocido como Valle Edén, situado a unos 28 Km de la ciudad. Sus padres fueron el Coronel Carlos Escayola, un hombre rico y poiderosa, y María Lelia Oliva, quien era en esos momentos su cuñada, y posteriormente sería su tercera esposa (Escayola estuvo casado con las tres hermanas Oliva!) Cuando María Lelia dio a luz a su hijo, el bebé le fue entregado a una de las empleadas, la francesa Berthe Gardes, quien llevó el niño a Buenos Aires, y lo crió como su propio hijo.
En la actualidad, hay un Museo de Gardel en Valle Edén; el lugar vale la visita, no sólo por Gardel, sino por la belleza del entorno.

Only 6 Km far from the city, it is situated Iporá, a spa which has nice prairies, several woods and an artificial lake, where water sports can be practiced; there is a camping ground, cabings, swimming pool and a restaurant as well.
It is a beautiful place, where the local people have relax and fun during summertime.

A sólo 6 Km de la ciudad, está ubicado Iporá, un balneario que tiene hermosas praderas, varios bosques y un lago artificial, en donde se pueden practicar deportes acuáticos; hay zona de camping, cabañas, piscina y parador también.
Es un hermoso lugar, en donde los lugareños descansan y se divierten durante el verano.

Cerro Batoví (Batovi Hill) is a hill situated 25 Km (15,5 miles) far from the city, by Route 5; it is one of the several flat hills, so typical in this area; it is 224 m (734 feet) high, and its name means "woman's nipple"... Do you see why?

El Cerro Batoví es un cerro ubicado a unos 25 Km de la ciudad, junto a Ruta 5; es uno de los numerosos cerros chatos, tan típicos de la región; tiene una altura de 224 m, y su nombre significa "pezón de mujer"... ¿Pueden ver por qué?

At Route 5, Km 363, a few kilometers before the city of Tacuarembó, there is a huge caricature of Carlos Gardel, "El Gardelazo"; this caricature was a project of a newspaper (El País), and it was made by an artist named Arotxa. The caption says: "Bienvenidos a El País de Gardel", which means "Welcome to The Country of Gardel" (the name of the newspaper, El País, means "the country".

En Ruta 5, en el Km 363, poco antes de llegar a la ciudad de Tacuarembó, hay una caricatura enorme de Carlos Gardel, "El Gardelazo"; esta caricatura es un proyecto de un diario ("El País"), realizado por un artista llamado Arotxa. El pie dice "Bienvenidos a El País de Gardel".

The Cathedral of Tacuarembó is San Fructuoso, and it was built in 1899; despite it is a very nice building, its interior is quite deteriorated. It is situated in front of 19 de Abril Square.

La Catedral de Tacuarembó es San Fructuoso, y fue construida en 1899; a pesar de ser un edificio muy lindo, su interior se encuentra bastante deteriorado. Está situada frente a la Plaza 19 de Abril

Bernabe Rivera Square is the third square situated along the main avenue; it is a very nice place, with palmtrees and wisterias, where children play everyday. The matter is that it takes the name of Bernabe Rivera, who was responsible of the extermination of the charruas (natives) in 1830.

La Plaza Bernabé Rivera es la tercera de las plazas ubicadas a lo largo de la avenida principal; es un lugr muy bonito, con palemeras y glicinas, en donde los niños juegan todos los días. El problema es que lleva el nombre de Bernabé Rivera, quien fue responsable del exterminio de los charrúas en 1830.

Plaza Colón (Columbus Square) is another of the squares of the city, which is also wooded and has a nice fountain, which is lit up during the night.

La Plaza Colón es otra de las plazas de la ciudad, que también es arbolada y tiene una linda fuente, que durante la noche es iluminada.

This is one of the three squares there are along the main avenue of the city; it has a monument of General Jose Artigas, our national hero; it is wooded square, with beautiful flowers, where the citizens enjoy the sun and update their neighbourhood news.
The Cathedral , the City Hall and the Police Headquarters are situated in front of this square.

Esta es una de las tres plazas que hay a lo large de la avenida principal de la ciudad; tiene un monumento al General José Artigas, nuestro héroe nacional; es una plaza arbolada, con hermosas flores, en donde los ciudadanos disfrutan del sol y se ponen al día con las noticias del vecindario.
La Catedral, la Intendencia Municipal y la Jefatura de Policía se encuentran frente a esta plaza.
