Uruguay's Countryside

by pepples46

is quite divers and travelling trough Uruguay,is peaceful and very satisfying as well as realy safe.people chat and wanne know where you from, how you feel and obious taking care of your well being.Uruguay is a cosmopolitan society, migration played a big part, people from all over the european continent have settled here. I could not find any discrimination against religion, political ideologies nor race related antifeelings. ..and when I think of it, there are seldom any disturbing news, riots or what have you out of Uruguay, exept maybe when it comes to Football (soccer), then the Urus are a bit temperamental and very passionate about their teams and specially about their national team. a friend of mine from Montevideo once said..is their life without football :-)) it was not unusual getting inventations from farmers or for a drink in the local pub.. Urus are very hospitable.

English Literature

I recommend an interesting book by W.H. Hudson called "The Purple Land". The book is about the protagnist's adventures and sojourns in 19th century Uruguay as an Anglo-Argentinean (like the author himself). It offers some insight into the history and culture of the place. I suggest this book for anyone Uruguay bound who needs to have something to read while on holiday.

Center of Montevideo

by pepples46

Montevideo is friendly on your feet, easy to walk, not a very big City...Tango and Football a great passion of this Citytry to get a ticket for on of the matches and you see a bit more of the fanatical side, Tango is the passion, some say the sad site of life none the less, very beautiful....Harbour Cities have a certain charm anyway

History

by Marie-France

Here is what I wrote in my travel journal:"When I think of how I would describe Colonia, I can't help making a parrallel with Quebec city, only on a much smaller scale. Colonia was founded in 1680, and the Portuguese and Spanish fought over it during the 18th century (Spanish finally won it in 1777) and the historical buildings date from that period. It's also on a river (Rio de la Plata) and had fortifications."

Architecture

by Marie-France

Here is another passage from my travel journal:"Some ruins remain. Some houses are made of stone and crumbling along the edges in a rather charming way. Some of the old buildings have been transformed into museums, restaurants and shops. The new buildings have adobe walls painted in pastel colours. "

General info

Uruguay is one hour ahead of Argentina. The exchange rates at the time of my visit (February 2005):$1 US = 26.2 Uruguayan Pesos$1 CDN = 21.5 Uruguayan PesosColonia was the cheapest of all the destinations I visited in Uruguay.

Currency

by ddbleu

Don't worry, they accept Argentine pesos, Uruguay currency or U.S. dollars. When I was there the exchange was 24 Uruguay pesos to one U.S. dollar. I found it easier just to use my Argentine money than try to convert prices to U.S. Going all over the area on a motor scooter. It's very picturesque.

a small country but charming...

by pepples46

a small country but charming and quite secure to travel. Rio de la Plata, Punta del Este for the lazy travellers who like the beaches and watersports.Montevideo for it's site seeing and shopping and the the countryside for a relaxed and quiet rewinding beautiful sunsets and friendly atmosphere and freedom to travel.the Capital was once surrounded by walls, maybe it was the reason for feeling secure

Beautiful virgin beaches....

There is nothing more important when you are away from home than being around nice and friendly people....Living in Uruguay for one year was the most beautiful time of my life and I want to thank everybody I met there for being the way they are. Tacuarembó: the hearth of the country

by andal13

Tacuarembó is the biggest departament of Uruguay, and it is situated just in the middle. A beautiful countryside, strange shape hills, fertile valleys, wandering streams, picturesque villages, an awesome ferns grotto... Tacuarembó is the home land of tango singer Carlos Gardel.
