One cannot miss visiting the Mercado del Puerto, where you will find the best asado, or barbecue, in the city. There are many restaurants to choose from. You definitely have to have a bottle of Medio y Medio to accompany your meal. I recommend going to Palenque.
Favorite Dish: Parrilla, which is essentially barbecued meat (as well as organs, so if your not too keen into eating that, make sure you ask them to substitute with more sausage or morcilla (blood sausage).
My husband loves chocolate ice cream and he had tasted some all around the world. Among the best are definitly the ones from : La Cigale in Uruguay. They have many branches all over. And not only chocolate, dozens of different flavours as well, including of course : dulce de leche!
Favorite Dish: Chocolate Ice cream for Gil, Coffee ice cream for me.
Mate Tea..can make a hot day much more bearable
Favorite Dish: the locals will take pride in sharing their national brew...you see many running around with flask of hot water to fill up the cuja again. first time you might feel a bitter taste , but that disapears soon, and your system will feel refreshed.

They have good pizza in Uruguay. Look for places with stone pizza ovens.
They have reasonable priced lunch specials, good quantity, excellent quality and taste. Great for back-packers ! Also try the 'flan casero' (kind of caramel pudding). No need of reservation. You must know that there are other 'La Pasiva' restaurants in all Montevideo (I don't know for the rest of Uruguay, just ask for the closer one !
Favorite Dish: Definitely 'Panchos' ! Girls will have one (to keep the line ...) but I have seen boys betting on who could eat more ... and believe me or not, I am talking of more than 10 !! They are delicious.
