Argentino Hotel: #1 in Piriapolis

by kyoub

The menu was posted outside the doors to the diningroom. Much to our surprise the food was less expensive there than any other restaurant of its calibur. There are several dining rooms in the Argentinio Hotel. We ate in the informal dining room that had one wall lined with windows, we had a view of the sea and Piriapolis. The waitress was quite pleasant and spoke a few words of english. It was a very special feeling just being there in the hotel having lunch like so many others had before us. Favorite Dish: I had a steamed filet of fish that was seasoned just right and delicious. Hubby had chicken with peppers, onions, and tomato that he enjoyed. For dessert he had custard with cream that was served in an original 1920 desert dish. I had flan with carmel topping on the side.It was the best food that we had in Piriapolis.

Las Terrazas: Seaside dining

by kyoub

The restaurant located inside the Casa Pueblo is called Las Terrazas, there you can enjoy drinks while admiring the beautiful sunset or dine by the moonlight. I would have to say that eating here is more for the experience than the food. Not that the food was bad, it is just that the view is more memorable. We especially enjoyed seeing the night herons out on the rocks waiting for a meal to come along.Dinner is served from 8:30pm until 1am. They offer seafood and steaks. Full bar and a nice wine selection. The snack bar is open all day. I had fresh steamed fish and hubby had grilled chicken for our main course. For dessert we shared an anise custard and a flan with carmelized topping. We also had a bottle of Don Pascal red wineA light buffet breakfast is included with your room. They offer coffee (nescafe), tea, milk, toast, yogurt, pastry, ham, and cheese. Breakfast service starts at...

Lucy's Restaurant y Salon de Te: Fresh fish

by kyoub

If all the restaurants in Jose Ignacio are as good as Lucy's it is no wonder that people come from miles away. Lucy's is a cute little restaurant/tearoom. I would have to say that the food here was probably the best we had in Uruguay. We had the option of inside seating or out on the patio. We chose inside. The service was prompt and waitress quite friendly. Menu in spanish only. Before our meal we were served small pieces of toasted home baked bread. Also a side dish of sauce/spread that looked like tartar sauce but it tasted different. It did have a mayo base though. Price for bread 45.00 UYU ($2.30 each)I had the curried fish and the presentation was very pretty. Why did I forget to take a picture?Hubby had strips of grilled fish with small white potatoes. We passed on the delicious looking desserts that were on display.I would have loved to have came back at 7pm for tea.

Cabañas at Mercado del Puerto: Montevideo

by alza

You just HAVE to go to the Port Market in Montevideo and go inside to check out the "cabañas", all serving fresh seafood prepared in every great way, with good white wine from Uruguay. The chef was young and handsome, he could not speak I think, but he was great with food and had a fantastic smile. The cabañas are all lined up side-by-side, indoors, they all look like a bar, with stools, and most have small tables in front, like a café-terrace. You just walk along, read the menus and pick the one you like best. (I'll write in the place name if I ever find it, but it's not important. Follow your inclination and enjoy, don't bother with details. The whole place specialises in fresh seafood dishes.)NOTE: Go there for lunch because I don't think the restaurants at the Mercado del Puerto are open at night. The area is not considered safe at night apparently. I can believe that... I walked away...

Pulperìas de los Faroles: Colonia del Sacramento

by alza

Cute and colourful from the outside, a bit "imposing" on the inside. The menu is intriguing but when I tried to enquire about it, the staff was stand-offish and cold. Still, the food was very good and the decor impressive. I don't think I'd go back after the cold shoulder I got there for showing an interest in foodstuff names unknown to me. The place was not filled with foreign tourists, far from it. But it felt like it was meant for tourists, especially those who don't ask questions. They lost me at "hola"... Doesn't matter, lots of friendlier places to eat at in Colonia, and for less dough. I don't remember what I had now. If they'd been nicer, I probably would remember the names of dishes.

It seems every restaurant: Wine drinking country

by melosh

The wines of Uruguay (and Argentina) that I tasted were quite good. The prices in restaurants were very low, and of course, even lower in stores. I think a wine tasting tour would be very rewarding. The Tannat is reportedly from a grape that no longer exists in France. This is a strong (robust?) wine that goes well with a beef steak dinner.

KITTY'S restó: Windy lunch on a beautiful Sunday

by schurlif

Arriving in Punta del Este on our Sunday whole day excursion , we were sent off to have lunch somewhere like good kids and given one and a half hours to accomplish this feat. Camila and I crossed the street and entered the area of the "Punta del Este Yacht Club" with lots of boats and pier and all.... First , our "mandatory" photo session on the pier ( see respective What To Do Tip ) and then we got really hungry and immediately sat down in the first restaurant we saw, right there on the Yacht Clubs Boardwalk.. Kitty's... As it was pretty cramped inside , we decided to sit outside , a mistake of sort because the wind was chilling... but we put up with it in return for the nice harbor view....The restaurant looked nice , the menu had a lot of different items , service was OK ...... not much I can really say after having one medium rated lunch there.. Well.... we decided to go for seafood...

Parrillada y Restaurante El Entrevero: another great churrascaria in Montevideo

by schurlif

Last night in Uruguay and our favorite little restaurant closed ( Sunday , late , like 11:00 pm ), we boarded a taxi and told the cabbie to take us to a good churrascaria , that is , a parrillada....So , we arrived at El Entrevero which also is like rustic with the feeling of an old place , lost in time , but in reality a smartly conceived restaurant with an interior that gives you instant appetite.....A rich menu , lots of goodies , Camila and I couldn't resist having red meat again.....So , we basically ordered the same as usual , blood sausage ( Camila and I are hooked on this...) which comes in two types ( "salty" and "sweet"..) , the salty being the "ordinary" that we know , if we love this and the sweet made with cinammon as ingredient , heavenly.......Then the chunk of wooden-log bbqued red meat , no matter which cut , everything melts on the tongue accompanied by baked potato...

I'M NOT SURE......... ! ! !: THE best little restaurant anywhere ! ! !

by schurlif

Well, I'm not totally sure about the name ( it says on the window : La Parrillada Don Pascoal ) , but parrillada is every steak or bbq house in Argentina and Uruguay and Don Pascoal , I believe , is an uruguayan wine brand sponsoring bbq-houses with free wine in return for brand advertising in and outside....... and... I have not ONE picture of the place because I didn't expect really to drop into such a JEWEL of a place which would have really been a dignified eatery in every sense for taking pics... but my camera stayed in the hotel room....The place is tiny and cramped... if you show up at 10:00 pm you will have to wait to be seated when a table ( out of maybe 12 or 13 ) becomes available. Camila and I just as the party ahead of us and another one behind us were waiting inside ( cold weather !!!) and standing in the way of the two very , very efficient and quick waitresses. While...
