Restaurant San Pedro: Good breakfast place

by Marie-France

I discovered this cafe on my first morning in Colonia, when I was looking for breakfast, and ended up returning every morning.Interestingly, it was very quiet and shady in the morning. People only started showing up around noon, and by 3:00pm it was crowded and people were baking in the sun!I liked it in the morning for its quietness and good people (and car) watching opportunities, as it's right along the main plaza (or in Colonia's case: main grassy patch!) :-) I only had the cafe latte and medialunas (croissants), but they were very good.

Mercado del Puerto: Parrilla in Montevideo

by Marie-France

The inside of the Mercado building is filled with parrilla "restaurants". They consist of a giant BBQ grill where all possible cuts of beef as well as sausages, chicken, and other "stuff" (read "organ meat") are cooked. Customers sit on stools at a long counter and order from the overhead menu. These are meat and potato places. Vegetarians, stay away!! I had a half order of "pulpa" (beef) & fries and a glass of red wine. Servings are really big, so a half order was enough for me. The whole thing cost me only 175 pesos (less than US $7).

Pulperia de los Faroles: Cheap and delicious "menu of the day"

by Marie-France

This restaurant specializes in pasta, which in Colonia is usually homemade. The menu of the day offers a choice of pastas, a dessert and a glass of wine (or pop) for one low fixed price.Comfortable interior and friendly service.

el meson del carmen: Colonia de Sacremento

by LPat

If you go to Colonia del Sacramento and walk to the old heritage part of the town, it is worth strolling a little bit beyond the main square near the lighthouse and near the old cars to Calle de San Jose to find this place.IT is beautiful with wooden beams, and enormous fireplace where they cook your meal - the restaurant is part inside and part outside. I ordered very simple grilled chicken leg and it was perfectly cooked - a great little place to visit.

Establecimiento Juanico: Go to a winery!

by bkathryn

Before dinner we had a chance to visit the cava, while having a glass of wine. After the dinner (and actually, sort of during), we were treated to a tango and dance and singing show. It was all wonderful! The food was BBQ (parrillada), similar to Argentina. There was a bit of a salad bar and then many different meats were brought around to the tables - steaks, sausages, etc. It was all delicioso!

Various: Mercado del Puerto

by mcaffa

One cannot miss visiting the Mercado del Puerto, where you will find the best asado, or barbecue, in the city. There are many restaurants to choose from. You definitely have to have a bottle of Medio y Medio to accompany your meal. I recommend going to Palenque. Parrilla, which is essentially barbecued meat (as well as organs, so if your not too keen into eating that, make sure you ask them to substitute with more sausage or morcilla (blood sausage).

by salime

La Pasiva - a chain of good restaurants/bars, all around the city. Mercado del Puerto - a whole lot of expensive barbeque restaurants in an old market. Chivito - Meat, ham, bacon, egg, tomato, mayonaise, and other stuff (I forget). In a sandwich ('al pan') or on a plate ('al plato').They have good pizza in Uruguay. Look for places with stone pizza ovens.
