In the history of the World Championship of soccer – Uruguay is by far the most successful – in terms of population. In fact they have appeared more times in the final four than ANY other country except Germany, Italy and Brazil – all of which have won more as well. Little Uruguay has won this international championship twice since it was created in 1930. They only have 3.5 million people, yet they are always a very competitive team internationally. Uruguay not only hosted the first championship – they won. They actually beat their much larger neighbours – Argentina. They built the Estadio Centenario in 1930 to host the first World Cup.
