THE MOST SUCCESSFUL SOCCER NATION - EVER!

by DAO

In the history of the World Championship of soccer – Uruguay is by far the most successful – in terms of population. In fact they have appeared more times in the final four than ANY other country except Germany, Italy and Brazil – all of which have won more as well. Little Uruguay has won this international championship twice since it was created in 1930. They only have 3.5 million people, yet they are always a very competitive team internationally. Uruguay not only hosted the first championship – they won. They actually beat their much larger neighbours – Argentina. They built the Estadio Centenario in 1930 to host the first World Cup. It’s named in commemoration of the centennial of Uruguay's first constitution. If that wasn’t good enough - Uruguay have won the Copa América (SouthAmerican Championship) a record 15 times. They have also won 2 Olympic Gold Medals in 1924 and 1928. This...

When in Uruguay, one must not miss the chance to see a soccer game at the historic Estadio Centenario. The stadium itself is very important because it is the site of the first World Cup. Perhaps the most exciting game you can go to is the Clásico - which is played between the two most popular clubs in Uruguay - Peñarol and Nacional. The energy in the stadium during these games is amazing.

Soccer is by far the most important spectator sports in Uruguay. When you have the chance you should go and check out a game at the Centenario, which is a monument in the history of world soccer and where the first World Cup was held in 1930. Uruguay won the WorldCup and again in 1950 against Brazil. Ever since people in Uruguay think of these good old times with melancholic nostalgia. Nowadays, the Celeste, the national team of Uruguay, is still a very good, but far away from winning a WorldCup again. The picture was taken from the World Cup qualifier Uruguay-Argentina on Oct 12, a game which Uruguay won 1:0, keeping their hopes for qualification alive

Golf

We went to the Club de Golf de Uruguay. It is right in Montevideo and it is on the water. The course was in amazing condition, greens fees and caddy totalled $52 and the views are great. Every hole has a good view of the ocean and the city. Only BUT is the mosquitos. Worst I have ever experienced. We had anti-bug stray on and it did nothing. if you were ever off the fairway, the minute you stood still to hit, you would see a dozen giant ones land on your arms and legs. When you slap them, you would have a trickle of blood. So wear long pants and bring a spray with Deet. Bring your own clubs (they say)

Uruguay no defraud?.
