Cerro Pan de Azucar

by kyoub

The 400 meters high Cerro Pan de Azucar is Uruguay's third highest point. It is located 10 km away from the resort town of Piriapolis. You can climb to the top, there are stairs but there is no road.At the top you will find a large cement cross that can be see as far away as Punta del Este. The cross is 35 meters high.

San Antonio Hill

by kyoub

San Antonio Hill is one of the most picturesque spots on the Uruguayan coast. It is a natural icon of Piriapolis resort town.It can be reached by chair lifts from the port area. a long hike, or you can drive up in your car to the top.On the way up, you will see a statue of the Fisherman's Virgin, on a small platform, overlooking the sea.At the top you will see the port, the bay, the center of town, and the surrounding hills. If you stay until evening the sunset is spectacular from here.Besides the views you will find souvenir shops, a restaurant with swimming pool, and a small chapel with a statue of San Antonio.

Explore Jose Ignacio

by kyoub

The resort town of Jose Ignacio is just a few miles up the beach road from Punta del Este.It is small, only 40 blocks, but it has everything that Punta has to offer except the nightlife. People come here mostly for the beaches, fishing, and the birds. The town is surrounded by several acres of lagoons, making it a birders paradise. It is also a good place to see the Right Whales as they pass off shore.Jose Ignacio was just a fishermen's village until people started hearing about the great restaurants and wonderful fresh seafood here.At the tip of the peninsula of Jose Ignacio is a lighthouse. It was built in 1877. You can climb to the top where the views are amazing.

Roller Coaster Bridge

by kyoub

On your way to La Barra from Punta del Este, you will cross an unusual bridge. At first glance you think roller coaster. It was at first a one lane bridge but in 1999 it became a two-way, W - shaped bridge. The bridge is one of the remarable feats of Leonel Viera.

Punta del Este

by Valeggua

Beaches, elegant yacht harbor, too many high rise apartment buildings and expensive hotels, a whole different Uruguay! We arrived in a 'ghost-city' with some elderly people tanning at the beach. And that's what Punta is all about, the beach and showing off with money.Well we did enjoy the silence and the beautiful sea, and off course Punta's famous 'Hand" coming out of the beach. You can also take a trip to Isla de los Lobos, where you can see sealions (I heard 180 000!), But we saved our US30,- and were happy to see 7 for free at the fishermen!I think Punta once was a glamourous place, but for now I'd rather call it Punta del yesterday...

Maldonado - Maldonado

by Valeggua

Maldonado is a polular capital of it's department. We stayed here, because hotels are more cheap here then in Punta del Este. The bus to Punta del este takes just 10 minutes (4 km)Like all Uruguayan towns, beautiful colonial buildings and friendly athmosfere.Nothing much further..

Punta del Este

by kyoub

Punta del Este is located on the southern end of Uruguay. It is 125km from MVD airport to Punta. It even has its own airport (PDP) and you may fly here from Buenos Aires. Punta del Este is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Uruguay. You will find white sand, sunshine, clear water, and beautiful people. The climate is mild, 25C to 32C (75F-90F) in summer and the winter temps never go below freezing.Punta is divided into two parts, Playa Mansa(Quiet beach) and Playa Brava(Rough Beach). It has modern buildings, top hotels, restaurants, and nightlife. The famous sculpture known as "The hand on the Sand" can be seen on the beach.

Colonia del Sacramento

by Valeggua

When visiting Uruguay, Colonia del Sacramento is a place you definately need to see!Walking trough the historical part (UNESCO heritage), feels like going back in time with the beautiful Portuguese style of colourfull houses and cobblestoned streets.Colonia del Sacramento is across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires, so there daily are lots of visitors from Argentina. To really enjoy the peacefull athmosfere without bumping into big groups of tourists, you should stay overnight. This way you can also enjoy the beautiful sunsets!

Montevideo: Ciudad Vieja

by alza

Discover Montevideo's Ciudad Vieja, in daytime as much as possible. There's a pedestrian street with art galleries and restaurants and just plain nice viewing opportunities, with vendors selling artifacts etc, on streets lined with beautiful old buildings. Montevideo seemed to me to be like a smaller, more approachable town, compared to Buenos Aires. People were gentler. I'm really sorry I didn't spend more time there. One thing I noticed, they're even crazier about maté iin Montevideo than they are in Buenos Aires. Everyone is out on the street with their thermos and maté gourd and bombilla. Even I had my kit... You meet a lot of great friends with a maté gourd :)
