Go for excursion to Quebrada de los Cuervos

by prasadsovani

It's a valley, very deep. You might be tired if not used to trekking. But for trekkers, it is no big deal.We all did not get tired at all.The slope was big & trees were many.Once you go down, there's a smalll river flowing....

Visit Colonia del Sacramento

by prasadsovani

Colonia del Sacramento was a beautiful town in Uruguay. Buenos Aires is across the river Rio Plata from here. Colonia changed hands between the Spanish & the Portuguese 14 times. Go to Colonia to see the mix of Spanish & Portuguese architecture. In some cases, you can see 2 neighbouring buildings -one with Spanish architecture & the other with Portuguese!!!Go up the tower nearer the beach & take a splendid view from the top.

Punta del Diablo

by ricardo_emp

For those people travelling through Uruguay en route to Buenos Aires or heading north to Brazil, stop, wait, look both ways....Uruguay has its own wonderful places, don't just use it as a transit point. For instancePunta del Diablo - 40km or so from the Brazilian border, this small fishing village is a chilled place with amazing beaches some activities and quite simply its sunstets should not be missed. About three hours from Montevideo this makes for a nice break in travelling. Come for a day and stay for a week, that it was many people do!read on herehttp://uruguay-travel.suite101.com/article.cfm/punta_del_diablo_uruguay

Horseback riding

by melosh

If you have, like me before my trip to Uruguay, never ridden a horse, then a visit to an estancia can be more than just a cultural experience. I learned about the intelligence, individuality, and herd instinct of these large animals. The estancia owner was patient and the horses were to various degrees tame. I did see a gaucho thrown, but still I found the experience relaxing and fun. Since this trip I have had a whole new interest in the horses I see in movies.Considering that there are horses in Northern Florida where I live, you might ask why I did not ride first at home? I am not sure of the answer, but it may have something to do with the purely recreational nature of horses here. I still have no interest of riding here, but whenever I get back to Uruguay I will ride again.Whether this will be your first, fourth or one of many rides, riding in Uruguay is a great thing to do.(One...

Montevideo - Estadio Centenario

by realde14

The Centenario was where the first WorldCup was held back in 1930, with Uruguay winning the trophy. Nowadays, the Centenario still hosts soccer games like the rivalry between local teams Penarol and Nacional, as well as all the home games of the national team, the Celeste.

The GLITZY side of Punta del Este

by schurlif

Punta del Este , or to be precise , Plaza de los Ingleses in La Salina , the southernmost point in Uruguay , was the site of attacks by the british navy against Uruguay during the Napoleonic Wars. Uruguayans say , they suffered a british invasion which might just be a slight exageration... Napoleon had inthroned his brother as king of Spain and therefore all spanish colonies were ruled by the Bonapartes, obvious sites for british strikes... A bit more to the east , on peninsulas begins the "rich and famous" Punta del Este, The playboys playing grounds , jet setters and corrupt foreign politicians homes for up to 40 million U$ ( I didn't take any pictures of these lavish homes , after all , they're just houses where people live , every once in a while) , the place to see and be seen by nouveaux riches , from Uruguay and all over the globe, film/ music stars, you name them , they're all...

FINGERS ! ! !

by schurlif

Driving further east from the Yacht Club and the sea lions , you'll find yourself driving along a nice and long stretch of beach ... and there, all of a sudden.... a hand, or rather "only" gigantic fingers , including the thumb, appearing from "below" , just like the Statue of Liberty at the end of the original 1966 version of the film "Planet of the Apes"...A nice and "must" stop for pictures or just imagining how a giant with such a hand would look like.....tall.....

UNEXPECTED SURPRISE FOR US

by schurlif

Another one and a half km or so further east from the Yacht Club, we stopped nearby a church and another big pier on which fishermen were cleaning out the catch of the day and throwing the left overs in the water......All of a sudden Camila let out a short scream and ran to the pier...... Arriving there , I saw too what had excited her so much... In the water , swimming , two BIG "things" that turned out to be sea lions...... Probably not at all an uncommon view for the locals but a delightful surprise for the tourists....

Caneloni , MacDonalds and Rio de la Plata...

by schurlif

This tip is more some kind of little joke , yet with a lot of truth to it..... On Sunday , 1st of October 2006 we took off for a whole day excursion to Punta del Este..... Driving east from Montevideo , one soon leaves the Federal District and province of Montevideo and enters the province of Canelones and moves on untill reaching Punta del Este which is located in the province of Maldonado. Our tour guide was joking with us about the name Canelones , reminding him of italian food..... So , I said , speaking of food , MacDonaldo also sounds like food but american food..... But the tour guide didn't like that joke.... Maybe he was against the USA or MacFood in general , but so what...?Anyway , if you're not exactly from the region , take an atlas and check the Rio de la Plata. This estuary is just freaky nature..... In the atlas it will look as if it was the ocean....... but on the...

Punta del Este Yacht Club Pier

by schurlif

On our whole day tour to Punta del Este we arrived there exactly in time to be hungry and ready for lunch in one of the many restaurants in every street..... Camila and I decided though to first take a walk to the local Yacht Club and check out the pier for a quick photo session before going to Kittys Restó.... , right there near the pier ( see my restaurant tip ). So , this is the tip.... take a walk on the pier..... and take your picture camera along.... mine is so practical , a thin Sony Cybershot 5 MP digital camera with big screen that fits snuggly in the pocket of my shorts.... so... hands and shoulder free... no need to schlepp heavy equipment around....
