The funnier sides of the Casapueblo museum

by schurlif

The museum is a real kind of labyrinth with stairs leading up and down and you never know where you’re going to end up….. but on the outside terraces you’ll find the nicer works by Vilaró , especially his blue paintings on the walls or his ceramic ( or clay ?? ) surreal cow….. His pregnant junk metallic statue inspired Camila to pretend to be pregnant too….. I just hope that Camilas eventual future baby won’t look like the one of the tin lady though…..

Metal sculptures and Ceramics

by schurlif

Now , let’s have a look at Vilarós 3D works… I thought they were quite pleasant to look at….. even with a certain sense of humor ( which is more visible in the next tip though….) Pic 1 is metal allright ( but “only” in relief ) while pics 2 to 5 show his style with sculptures and ceramics…. There are more and even nicer ones in the next tip ….

The museum in Casapueblo

by schurlif

Still like 15 km away from Punta del Este, between the Bahias Portosuelo and Maldonado all of a sudden an unexpected surprise….Casapueblo , an architectonic mixture of rustic , moorish, greek and fairytale-barbieland….. The structure is immense , built on a cliff, from bottom to the top and contains a museum with the works by the artist Carlos Paez Vilaró….. I liked his sculptures and ceramics a lot but was not too impressed by his paintings. The museum also shows a 15 minute video about Vilarós life and work , totally narcistic , so I got up and left because it was unbearable for me….. He supposedly lives in a rooftop apartment in or near the hotel , which is also part of this megaconstruction (see a pic of it in the hotel leaflet in the hotel tips……)Pic 5 shows the entrance ticket to the museum , they want you to fill out the form with your personal infos… in return they promise a...

PIRIÁPOLIS

by schurlif

On the way to Punta del Este we stopped in this quaint liitle city with its famous Santo Antonio hill , famous because this is a "high" elevation in Uruguay and one has a very nice panoramic outlook , pics one and three....Pic two shows the chapel on top of San Antonio hill.Pics four and five were taken a little later , a bit more down the road direction east....

still strolling.......

by schurlif

I didn't walk around much , I was tired too.... so , I actually made a round around the block..... I discovered right next to the Punta Carretas Shopping Mall this "little plaza" named after two doctor brothers ( Pic 1 ) , the "Teatro de la Candela" ( Pic 2 ) , some interesting architecture ( interesting in my eyes.... pic 3 ).... the Montevideo Golf Club ( pic 4 ) and I took a pic of a montevidean car with the license plate , which shows that Montevideo , unlike cars from other state provinces , doesn't have its "own" license plate "name".... License plates of cars registered in Montevideo say simply "Uruguay".....I know , this tip is not really exciting , maybe it should be under "Off the Beaten Path" , but then consider that it shows little details of a trip that otherwise wouldn't make it to the "Tips" and small details make a big part of an experience too.....

Strolling around in the hotels surroundings

by schurlif

First day , afternoon.... Camila needs to sleep a little while I'm wide awake..... So , I decide to check out the neighborhood and have my first Montevideo impressions on foot. Soon I discover this interesting and beautiful church , which attracted me because of its architecture. It is ( when you're standing on Calle Jose Ellauri looking at the Punta Carretas Shopping Mall - see shopping tip - ) at the corner to the left..... Calle Jose Ellauri is , besides this church and the shopping mall also the street where "our" best little restaurant ( see restaurant tip ) is located...Pic 1 : Nuestra Señora del Sagrado Corazón de Punta CarretasPic 2: So you know where you are......Pic 3: So you know even better where you are.....Pic 4: Churches interiorPic 5: Churches interior

PLAZA ARMADA , MONTEVIDEO

by schurlif

Plaza Armada is a park right at the immense Rio de la Plata where people hang out on Sundays , enjoying the phantastic view of Montevideos "skyline", an ideal place to relax and contemplate , maybe think about the sense of life....(??). Anyway , a most enjoyable place ... we went there twice in two days , looking at the pics brings back good memories.....This time no picture captions , the pics speak for themselves ( and it becomes increasingly difficult to invent captions anyway.....)

CITY TOUR , part 5

by schurlif

I couldn't have written this tip without the help and infos from VT member Rafgys , my special thanks and greetz to him... !!All these pictures were taken in the very beautifull and big Parque de los Aliados.....Pics 1 and 2 show a monument paying tribute to the early settlers of Uruguay. This monument literally ascends from the ground and reminds somewhat of the wagon trails heading west after the American Civil War ( as seen in inumerous Hollywood flicks )... it is wild and romantic , adventurous and classy.....Pic 3 shows Camila in the settings of the park....Pic 4 shows a monument that left me speechless in jaw drop mode..... A depiction in tribute to the socalled "LAST FOUR" of the indigenous Charruas indios..... before they vanished into oblivion...Were all indigenous people in todays Uruguayan territory wiped out ??? I can't believe and accept this. No matter in what precarious...

CITY TOUR , part 4

by schurlif

This one was also nice to look at......The parliament of Uruguay , an impressive sandstone buiding in the middle of a big square with a rotatory street around it.....Camila insisted on having pictures made with both flags blowing in the wind.....The left flag is the Uruguayan national flag , the one on the right , I'm guessing , the flag of Montevideo....

CITY TOUR , part 3

by schurlif

So.... we took the few steps from Plaza de la Constitucion through a narrow pedestrian street to the impressive Plaza de la Independência. First thing you see coming from the direction we took were the remnants of the old city walls , actually a gate in the old city walls. This monument was restored though and you can easily tell which stones are "brandnew" and which are the originals. (pic 1 ). Next (pic 2) the general view of the square with a megalomanic statue of a man on a horse , really high and full of pathos and ( in a good and funny sense) one of the weirdest apartment / office buildings I have ever seen in my life.... What an architecture...! ( pic 3)... someone has fulfilled his/her architectural extravaganza here..... And it was really difficult to take a picture of the man on the horse (pic 4) ... So high that you had to step backwards a lot for the right angle.... trying to...
