CITY TOUR , part 2

by schurlif

Arriving in the old historical part of Montevideo , we had a look at the main cathedral , which was very nice but maybe due to sparce population when it was built rather humble , which is a good thing though .... What bothered and irriitated me was the corridor of old women formed in front of the entrance begging for money..... and I receiving dirty looks because I didn't feel like sharing whatever problems they might have had.... This kind of behavior in front of "gods house" should be condemned and forbidden.... Those special looks were aimed at giving me a bad conscience but I refused to have one.....Inside the cathedral ( pics 1, 2 and 3 ) the obvious and expected besides maybe pic 3 , on which the first archbishop of Montevideo , Hyacinth Vera , is depicted. A quite idolizing statue , I would say.....Leaving the cathedral , you find the Plaza de la Constitucion right in front of...

CITY TOUR , part 1

by schurlif

Well, I have to admit that sometimes I just don't care about the kind of city tours for tourists that are usually thrown into a package deal.... But this one was nice and took over three and a half hours..... These first pictures are of places where I only took one picture... You will find the others in the following tips.....The bus was practically empty so we could stretch and spread out at will , the tour guide Ricardo was nice but didn't speak Portuguese … Camila didn't mind , she understood half of what was said in Spanish and English…OK, here we go :Pic # 1: the city hall on Ave. 18 de JulioPic # 2: the almost empty tour bus......Pic # 3: this is Plaza.... hmmmmm.... I forgot.... and this is the statue of........ hmmmmmm... forgot too...but it really doesn't matter , there are so many nice and cute Plazas with so many statues in honor of whoever..... But as we just drove by without...

Colonia del Sacramento

by pepples46

Colonia del Sacramento was the first european settlement in Uruguay by the Portugues, from memory..around 1580.the spanish arrived later and started to fight over this beautiful and quite stratetic little place, sandwiched between the two big countries. and Uruguay was briefly annected by Argentina. in 1825 Uruguay became independent and a soverign state.Urugayanos have the luxery of two languages, spanish is the official Language, but portugues is very much understood.

The Cerro

by mcaffa

In Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay one can find the “Cerro de Montevideo.” This “Cerro,” which means hill in Spanish, is located across the bay from the city.Atop the Cerro there is a fortress called the Museo Militar Fortaleza General Artigas (Fortress General Artigas Military Museum). This fortress was constructed in 1808, the last military construction build during the colonial period. It was not intended to be part of the city’s defense; rather its purpose was to protect the lighthouse.Great to visit for an hour or two. Beautiful view of the city. TIP: Go there in taxi. If you do go in bus make sure you are with a local, and dress down. The area below the cerro is not exactly one of Montevideo's finest areas. But don't get scared off - nothing happens around the fortress since it is guarded by the Uruguayan military.

Colonia de Sacramento

by realde14

Colonia is a small village with a historic center that ranks among the best preserved examples of colonial architecture in Latin America.Built in 1680 by the Portuguese, Colonia de Sacramento used to be a serious rival to across-the-river Buenos Aires because of its contraband activities.Today it is a very small place easily visited from Montevideo or Buenos Aires.

Jose Ignacio

by realde14

Jose Ignacio is about 30 kilometres away from Punta Del Este. The mood is a bit more chilled and relaxed, and the landscape wilder. There are no high rises yet, only excellent beaches, restaurants, bars and sunsets.

Punta del Este - Barra

by realde14

La Barra, across the ondulating bridge from Punta del Este, is a more relaxed version than Punta Del Este, which can resemble a concrete jungle sometimes. Although it does get increasingly popular, especially during summer, it has retained a certain local charm and caracter. There are plenty of bars and restaurants

Punta del Este - Casa Pueblo

by realde14

Casa Pueblo, built by Uruguayan artist Carlos Paez Villaro, is built on a hill, overlooking the ocean.Because of its whitewashed style and sheer size, it seems abit surreal. The views of the sunset are perfect from here are perfect. There is also a gallery, a restaurant, as well as hotel rooms for rent at the Casa Pueblo

Punta Del Este

by realde14

In around December Punta Del Este turns into the best party town south of the equator, with beautiful models en masse and endless parties. Miami, Marbella, Ibiza, you get the picture. The places I liked the most were actually outside of Punta (which at times can seem like an endless row of concrete highrises) such as the more relaxing Jose Igancio and Barra.
