Montevideo - Plaza Independencia

by realde14

More than half of the Uruguayans live in Montevideo, so it is only normal that a visit with Uruguay starts with Montevideo, and more precisely with its historic center. The Plaza Independencia is the main square in Montevideo, where you have the Avenida de 18 de Julio on one side and the pedestrian streets that lead into the old part of town on the other side.

Punta Del Este

by clmetal

From Montevideo, you can take a bus to Punta Del Este for $12 round trip. The buses are nice, have checkin for big bags and run frequently. PDE is nice, clean and peaceful. It is worth going to for sure, everyone on our trip loved the place and would like to return.

Relax by the water

by Marie-France

Colonia's old town is a peninsula jutting out into the Rio de la Plata, so it has water on every side but one! Walk around and find your own favourite spots to sit down and watch the river at different times of day.

Bird's eye view of Colonia

by Marie-France

To get a bird's eye view of old Colonia and the Rio de la Plata (river), climb up the lighthouse, located in the middle of the ruins of the Convent of San Francisco. It only costs a couple of pesos (less than $1).

peacefull places

by braechi

There are some places at the uruguayan coast, which are a must. Check out: CABO POLONIO, VALIZAS, PUNTA DEL DIABLO and SANTA TERESA. During january they get crowded by uruguayan and argentinan tourist. That can be nice, cause there are concerts and parties. BUt it´s also worth to go there in some other period, you will have peacefull moments with locals and the sea!!!!Cabo Polonio:You can reach this place just by walkin or with a 4WD car. There are some trucks going there. For accomodation ask the locals. You will find a lot of people consuming drugs there /specially mariuhana).Valizas:It´s nice to walk from Valizas to Cabo Polonio, it takes about 2 hours and it´s all along the sea and across dunes. Valizas itself is a small fishermanvillage which gets very crowded during summer. Nice beach. There is a river to cross by boat, the man doing this is very nice, may you can sleep at his...

Montevideo

by canuckmike

When I first arrived in Uruguay's capital, Montevideo, it was rainy and the city gave me a creepy feeling. As the rain let up later in the night I went for a stroll for a while and I started to like the city fairly quickly. The next day my girlfriend and I could not stop walking around and enjoying the city. We walked through many of the plazas, walked to the harbour, walked around the Microcentro and through random streets. If you visit Uruguay, you must visit this city that has just about half of the country's population. Take your time and explore this laid backcity that was founded in 1726.

Must hear activity 8

by andal13

by mcaffa

When visiting Montevideo, you absolutely have to take a stroll down the Rambla, or the seaside drive. My personal favorite is to go from Punta Carretas up to Buceo. It is really a beautiful walk, especially on Sunday afternoons when tons of people go and sit and drink mate or lay at the beach.
