Perhaps it is unfair to call a free museum a tourist trap, but you will have to look carefully at the smaller objects to find anything in this museum that is not a copy. Now they are high quality copies and fairly labeled and the museum is clean and well lit, but . . .this is certainly a museum you could skip.

There is one experience that is kind of fun. If you squint your eyes you can imagine yourself in a gallery with a collection of greatest sculptures of the world all in one room.

Another nice experience could be interacting with the student groups visiting the museum.

You rent a car (It was $18.60 a day.) You add the regular fees and taxes (Another $7 a day.) You buy insurance on the internet ($10 or $12 a day) and you think all you have left is gas, but when you go to pickup your car you are told that you have to pay another $7 a day of tax on the insurance you bought outside Uruguay.
Maybe I am the only one to be trapped by this outrage. Perhaps if I had fought harder against the illogic of this extra cost it would have disappeared. This is just a warning so you can be prepared.

All in all renting a car to see the countryside was a great decision. Take full advantage of the chance to stop in lots of little towns and to pull off the road to contemplate the scenery that you would only see in passing if you traveled by bus.

  • Punta del Este is full of Argentinians. It is a nice place, but not extraordinary. Beaches are nothing special either.
