Bus is a good way to get...

by salime

Bus is a good way to get around. It costs about 70 cents or so (9.50 pesos last time I was there). There are a lot of buses, and they don't have their routes clearly marked. Ask a local which bus to take. Otherwise the taxis aren't too expensive. A trip across town might cost $4-5. Don't pay before you get to your destination, and don't try to agree on a price beforehand - they'll charge you more than they should!Last time I checked, you can rent a manual transmission car for about $40 per day, or $100 for 3 days (I don't know how much per week). Automatic transmission is much more expensive.

If you are in Argentina, Uruguay is an easy day trip. If you go from buenos Aires for just one day, I would go to Colonia del Sacramento, a very pretty old portuguese colonial town 1 hour by hydrofoil from Buenos Aires. The fast ferry to Montevideo, the capital, takes about 3 hours.

There are two fast boats and two slow boats per day between colonia in uruguay and buenos aires. the slow boats take 2h30 min and the fast boats take 50 minutes. the round trip fares are about 125 argentine pesos. there is minimal departure taxes on both ends.Colonia can be covered well on foot. and the pleasure is walking around cobblestoned streets lined with sycamore trees and watching the soft rippling of waves from rio plata

I took the plane from Germany to Argentina (Buenos Aires) and then the ferry-boat to Montevideo. The second possibility is a connecting flight. Unfortunately, Uruguay is not considered as being a main destination country in Latin America, so most flights go through Buenos Aires or Rio de Janeiro. But the ferry or the catamaran are still very good enough ways to go to; Modern ferris and catamarans as well as the harbour. The catamaran is more expensive.Inside country, the transportation is the bus. They go everywhere, are secure and prices are fair. Of course they might take a little bit longer, but the gaucho countryside is worth doing so and Uruguay is not that big ...
