Caracas

Favorite thing: Just getting out and wandering around Caracas is worthwhile. While the city is a bit grubby and smoggy, it does provide the visitor with the experience of visiting a typical Lantin American city. Wander through the markets along Sabana Grande or just sit and watch the old fellas playing chess. Don't miss trying a cachapa (hot corn fritter) with cheese and ham - delicious at just 1,000 bolivares.

Favorite thing: General Information of Caracas

Caracas, entrance door of South America

Although this site is defined as an 'eco-tourism' site, it is an obligation to talk about Caracas when referring to Venezuela, since it is definitively the center of all type of tourism activity, because most of the transportation companies centralizes their operations starting from this cosmopolitan and active city.

Caracas is a city of contrasts without limit, with a population near four millions and a half of inhabitants, modern, actual, filled with color and life. Originally created in a beautiful and fertile valley, It has expanded in spite of their natural limits, until beyond the confines of the state that originally contained it, penetrating in adjacent states, converting its metropolitan area almost in a state by its own. Their vast extension takes it from the western confines of the Federal District, until going into in several municipalities of the Miranda State.

In spite of it vast development, of the impressive freeways and avenues that interweave it, of the enormous buildings that seem to imitate towers of Babel, is in reality a town that palpitates in their daily existence. From their system of underground transport called 'Metro' (pride of all the of the 'caraqueños') they go and come to their works as an army of millions of human beings formed by workers, housewives, students, in short: of people.

Due to their cosmopolitan development, Caracas has lost something of its original ingenuousness, to leave step to impressive malls that substitute partly like meeting center of the of the 'caraqueños' to what before were squares and parks, although these persist and they are usually very visited at early hours, for those that take care of its physical conditions, sportsmen and walkers of all ages are searching to breathe some pure and crystalline air, that the city has lost as part of the payment for its development and growth.

Caracas is also a stock exchange center, since converge in it headquarters of the most important companies in the Caribbean and South America, besides it is one of the most important centers in reference to the oil transactions at world level. In their stock exchange and in their financial markets, papers of the most important companies in the country and in the world are traded, and it is forced bridge in the transactions with the community of nations of the Andean Pact.

Caracas is also a great center regarding the Latin-American culture and in its theaters and galleries are exhibited the best exponents in this, as well as cultural representations of all parts of the world make presentations in Caracas in their world tours.

In order to visit Venezuela, Caracas is the most important entrance of the country, although you will be able to come to the country entering for other cities like Porlamar, Valencia or Maracaibo, in that case you will have lose to know one of the most important metropolises in this side of the world...

Favorite thing: I enjoyed Caracas immensely. The people were friendly, although a little taken aback by my requests to take pictures of me (I got the distinct feeling they thought I had a lot of nerve to ask them to do anything).

Fondest memory: Los Roques is the most beutiful place I've ever been in my life. I'll go back to Caracas just to spend more time on these empty islands.
