All of the "AREPERAS" in Caracas: It's round and it is made of corn flour...

IT'S AN "AREPA"!!! That is a "must" in a venezuelan table. A round white arepa made with corn flour. Is our own, local, beloved equivalent to bread.

But we also have plenty of bread. All sorts of them: french, whole weat, american loafs, etc. But the "arepa" is like a piece of a venezuelan heart. No, a piece of a venezuelan stomach.

There are a bunch of AREPERAS all over. This our traditional fast food place. But good fast food. There, as if it was a sandwich, you can eat arepas with all kinds of things inside: chese, shreded meat, tuna salad, chicken salad and avocado (that one is called "Reina Pepiada"), saussages, ham, etc.

No, no marmelade, no honey, nothing sweet inside of an arepa.

And that is something foreigners love to do. Arepa with jelly... Oh well! Help yourself, go ahead, eat it that way if you wish. Maybe a venezuelan, a table near by, will say: "Yuk!"... But that is ok, you can eat your arepa with whatever makes you happy.

These places are absolutely informal. They are open all day and most part of the night too. It is very funny to see people -very, very, late in the evening- coming out from an elegant party, or from a rehearsal at the theater, or from a long day of extra hours at work, and all of these characters metting in an arepera.

    I dont like arepas.

    HAHAHAHAHA!!!

I must be the only venezuelan that doesnt likes them and I'm well known for the wonderfull arepas I bake. Can you believe that?

If I had to eat an arepa, because there is no other choise, it will be a QUESO GUAYANES one. An arepa filled with a very soft white nonsalty cheese of ours.

Heladería 4D (4D Icecream Parlors): You dont have to go to Italy to get icecream!!!

    4D ICECREAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!
    by carolinaEspada
Yes, you no longer have to go alllllllllllllllllll the way to Italy in order to eat some of the finest italian icecreams!!! Of course, nothing compares to the glamour of going to Varese (northen Italy), in an autum afternoon, to eat a marron glacée icecream with "panna" (whipped cream). But, fortunatelly in Caracas we have several 4D (right now I can think about 3 of them). Nocciola icecream, nutella, gianduia, tiramisú, pistaccio, very-trully-deep-inside chocolate, capuccino... and about 20 more. They also have sherberts and yogourt icecream.

Nocciona icecream is my favorite. It is so good that when you taste it, if you close your eyes, you can imagine yourself next to the Como lake on a clear day surrounded by happy people.

I dont think we have one of those places. Not only in Caracas, the capital, but in Venezuela, the country.

If I´m wrong I wish that someone will correct me. But I havent heard about one of those places in my entire life.

But we certanly dont have the all-you-can-eat tradition.

If you are planning to invest in Venezuela, that is something to think about. A restaurant -with no competition at all- where people go to stuff themselves. Now... would venezuelans like that? I certanly dont.

Maybe if it was an all the ice cream you can eat... that I would love!

This is the turn to introduce some Venezuelan delicacy. The picture shows the corn-flouer bread (a bit unusual to me but tastes good) which you can eat with cheese / butter / spicy avocado sauce. Kelly asked me not to share with other VT’ers that she is not good at making this bread though she is a certified Venezuelan chef!

Well this is really mouth-watering. Slices of beef separated and then cooked with tomato and chilli and other spice. Taste like Indian food a little but I moved a step forward enjoying the spicy chilli-pepper sauce what not even Venezuelans dare to eat! I was so excited that I forgot to show enough of table manner that is, eating and eating forgetting everyone’s around! For two of us it cost only 35000 Bolivares (15 USD). Yes, it also includes dessert and drink.

    Nicolás & Carolina: pizza
    Vivaldi and salad.
    by carolinaEspada
People go there your their excelents pizzas, and the variety of them. But they have other types of italian food... and the desserts... OHHHHHH THE DESSERTS!!!

I didnt have pizza. I dont like pizza, sorry. I just had a tiny salad with "endivias" (kind of a tiny sour lettuce, apples, goat cheese, and mustard and honey dressing, delish).

Nicolás, my friend from kindegarten and grammar school, had a Vivaldi pizza: a four seasons one. Each quarter, one different flavor. My other friends, Alejandro, Fernando and Pedro José had other pizzas. They all agreed they were great. (But they dont look as pretty as the ones from Das Pastelhauss).

The place is always packed. You must come, very early or very late, sit down at the bar, drink something or not, and wait until your table is ready. Half an hour, 45 minutes...

There is an smokers section and valet parking too.

    OH MY GOD!!!
    THE DESSERTS!!!
    YOU WOULDENT BELIEVE THAT!!!
My friend Nosrat, who is a princess from the Qdjar dinasty (the one lasted 3 centuries and came before the Pahlavi dinasty), had "panna cotta cup with chocolate cream". That would be like a cooked white cream. Nicolás had "Tiramisú", which is made with many ingredients, flour, coffee and marcarpone cheese (which is hard to find in Venezuela), and Pedro José, Alejandro, Fernando and I had oreo cake with nutella cream and other chocolate cream. That was the maximum pleasure. You loose sense of who you are where you are.

    Ahhhhhh chocolate!!!

  • Colas de langosta = lobster tails - Caracas
    Colas de langosta = lobster
    tails
    by carolinaEspada
In December 1960, Marcos Battipaglia, Maestro Pastelero (Master Chef speciallized in pastries) founded Pastelería Doris. There you can find cakes, "petit fours", chocolates, sweets, italian icecreams and the best coffee in the area.

Also, they have salty stuff: baked pastries filled with turkey and cream cheese, ricotta and spinach, jam and cheese, "sfogliatella" and also pizza squares.

Since Signore Battipaglia is a big italian soccer fan and a huge Ferrari Formula 1 fan, he has an inmense tv set in the tables area. There you can have breakfast, on a Sunday morning, and see how Shumacher and Barrichello win again and again and again.

Open from TUESDAY until SUNDAY. Mondays closed, even if on their www they say they are open.

They have a delivery service, but is much nicer to go there, sit down, eat pastries and chat for a couple of hours. There is no rush.

Check their www and click everything clickable. You must see the varieties of cakes they have!

COLAS DE LANGOSTA = Lobster tails. They are not made out of lobster, nor fish. But they look like a lobster tail. Is a sweet crunchy pastry that comes in solid layers. It is filled with "crema pastelera" (pastry cream... a sweet, thick, non greasy, yellowish cream).

They also have a chocolate filling version. But I rather eat the original.
