I went on a hiking tour for a day in Henri Pittier National Park. I booked the tour with Jungle Trip, which is owned by a German woman, Claudia, and her husband Emilio. Their office is in Posada Casa Luna, a small posada next to Hostal Colonial in Puerto Colombia. The day tour was 60 000 Bs (July 2007).
We started the tour at 8.30 in the morning by taking the local bus from Puerto Colombia to the place where we started our walk. Claudia was our guide, a great guide as she knows a lot of things about the flora and fauna in the area and we often stopped to hear about it. It was very interesting. At lunch time we stopped to eat, sandwiches with cream cheese with herbs and a lot of different fruits (more than we could eat). In the afternoon we saw a place where they make sugar out of the sugarcane. Finally we reached a house owned by Claudia and Emilio and there we had a cold beer on the roof (if you take a two day hike that is where you sleep, in hammocks). After that we went down to the small river to have a bath. We walked back to the road and had another beer, bought from the store, while we were waiting for the bus.
If you are in Puerto Colombia you shouldn’t miss a visit to the National Park.

East of Puerto Colombia is the popular beach Playa Grande. It is not very big, but lays beautifully in a bay and is lined with coconut palms. I had heard the beach could be quite dirty, but I arrived to Puerto Colombia on a Monday afternoon and then the beached had been cleaned up after the weekend visitors and it looked fine to me. There are a few restaurants around and the ice cream vendors are walking back and forth along the beach.

Being in Puerto Colombia is a great way to explore more isolated islands. Go at the end of the main street and ask one of the fishermen how much they take to go to Cepe. They charged us less than our posada... (10 000bs for a RT tour to Cepe). Go there early so you'll really feel like Robinso Crusoe. We got there at 7.30am and were only 5 couples on the beach.

Get to Puerto Colombia by boat, enjoy the lower mountains, hiding places for many birds like pelicans and other species - reach the harbour after a impressing boat ride - and than - enjoy the local welcome drink - Ron Coco and talk to the locals.
