Isla Margarita Things to Do

  • Jeep Tour

Our Friday consisted of being picked up in the hotel lobby for a Jeep Tour we had signed up for (www.roadunlimitedtours.com)We chose it from a guy on the beach, but he didn't want paid until we were being picked up. The cost of ours was $35 USD each. If you are asked for a deposit, steer clear, unless it is a travel/tour operator with a fixed...

A town not far from Porlamar. There's a small cathdral on the edge of Plaza Bolivar which was built in the 16th century and one of the oldest colonial churches in the country. There's also a museum on the northern side displaying some of the region's history.A 10 minute walk away from the plaza of Castillo de Santa Rosa, built to protect from...

  • Don't miss eating out at Sambil

Cine Citta has great Italian food and they offer great service. Inside they have large flat screen TV's with ESPN on. I have enjoyed the food so much that usally when I or my friends decide to eat out they go there. They're very accomadating as well, last time we went .....there was 11 of us to sit and they gave us our own section with a long table...

The best place to eat on Playa Caribe and the food is gorgeous. All fresh especially the fish. You must try the catalan which is like red snapper, the best fish I've ever tasted, with a side order of tostones with cheese. The food isn't cheap, fish dish was about 45 bolivars but it's really worth it and we came back again and again.Service is fast...

We made it out to a restaurant this visit to Playa el Agua. If you are looking for an affordable meal by the beach and are tired of your all-inclusive hotel food then you will enjoy a visit to this place. The staff are welcoming, friendly and attentive. Simple decor with a nice ocean breeze made for a pleasant evening out. We had fellow travellers...

Señor Frogs is one of the limited nightlife options. Weekends are obviously a better time to go as it is usually pretty dead during the week (at least in the low season). It is just like any other Señor Frogs. Pretty lax

  • "Gambling"

If you've never gambled before, this is the perfect way to get the flavour!:) In the mall El Sambil, there is a small casino area; if you wait a couple of minutes, you will see a huge door opening. Get in there! It only stays open for a minute or so. That's the bingo area. Very popular in Venezuela. You play for extremely small amounts of money and...

Isla Margarita Transportation

  • Cheap gas means cheap taxis

As Venezuela is an oil-rich country and unlike Canada, they don't make their money off the backs of their citizens, gas is very affordable (when we there it was @ 3 cents/litre!). This cheap gas makes getting around the island by taxi very affordable. We went from our hotel on Playa el Aqua to Porlamar for 25,000 Bolivars, which is about just over...

Also for the next days, he brings you wherever you want to be... Like a personal taxi if you want. Very handy if you've found yourself a friendly, safe driver...

Isla Margarita Local Customs

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Margaritenos themselves are very friendly people, but if you ever notice when you walk into a business or any place they always say the word "Buenas" this just means Hello ...like Greetings. They expect and always greet each other, they may not expect it from Tourists since it is THEIR custom but I think it would be a nice surprise if any of you visiting Margrita would be so kind as to follow this custom and greet them back as well. The person who enters the room or office is the one that is suppose to say it first. (:^) Try it ...I'm sure it will bring a smile to their face and you'll get a hello to !

Isla Margarita Warnings and Dangers

  • ATMs

You really should ensure you take sufficient cash with you to last you. There are some banks - Porlamar, Jaungriego but from most hotels this is a cab journey away. There are no ATMs in Playa el Agua, even if there were they may not work for you. I tried several times to get money out but to no avail. After you put your card in and enter your pin...

  • Day time muggings

MARGARITA ISLAND AND PALM BEACH HOTEL ARE VERY NICE PLACES BUT USE THE SECURITY MEASURES AVAILABLE TO YOU AND COMMON SENSE. TAKE THE SHUTTLE FROM/TO THE HOTEL/BEACH ALL THE TIME, NOT FOR LAZINESS, BUT FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY. DON’T LEAVE THINGS ON THE BEACH UNATTENDED OR FALL ASLEEP WITHOUT SOMEONE LOOKING AFTER YOUR THINGS (SOMEONE’S SHOES WERE TAKEN...

  • Mind drunk drivers

Because alcohol and “poverty” is not an ideal mixture, lots of people at night could drive drunk! Many of the bicycle accidents are caused by drunk drivers. The roads are most of the time desolated and if someone is not paying any attentions worse things may happen. So mind the road if you are bicycling in the evening (and during the day)A "famous"...

Isla Margarita What to Pack

  • Packing tips

If you are staying on the island you generally do not need to take many long trousers or tops because it is very hot and humid of a night time. If you are going to the Orinoco Delta from the island you really must take long trousers and a long sleeve top because you will get bitten. Medication for upset stomachs, although there are some 24 hour...

While you are on the catamaran trip, they will stop to let people see the underwater world of Isla Margarita. It's surprisingly expensive in Margarita so make sure you take plenty of money with you to spend. Food is probably equivalent to prices in England, perhaps a little cheaper, so you can understand why people generally do not leave their all inclusive hotels. Souveniers are also marked up (obviously). If you take a trip to the Orinoco or Canaima...
