arab store at the end of malecon: warao handicrafts

at the end of malecon away from the warao indian camp, is the store which has a good selection of warao handicrafts. you may think it is easier to obtain handicrafts with so many warao about but they make it for their own use and only reluctantly sell it to middlemen to sell it to tourists.. best buys are baskets and hammocks both made from palm fibres.

AT the malecon one comes across the fisherman, now resting after an early mornings work. they offer to take you around the river if you like.. all in all , very friendly folks, sipping a beer, enjoying the profits from the abundant catch from the river..

Warnings and Dangers

Coca Cola and The Rubbish

Globalization has brought coca cola to all parts of the world.. do you remember the line delivered by giancarlo gianinni in a lena wertmuller movie? when he is in an island, cast away, he comes across a statue of jesus.. he is disgusted and he says.. more popular than coca cola!
the rubbish accumulation at the foot of the squatters camp of the warao indians is littered with soft drink plastic bottles and plastic wrappers!
