there are lots but flying to canaima, taking a boat down the orinoco, trekking through the jungle, walking though the waterfalls then seeing angel falls.i can't think of a better way to spend a weekend. taking a boat to one of the many islands off tucasas, spending the day on the white sands with about 20 amigos having a b-b-q and getting very drunk on the local beer-polar.

Go to the gulf of Venezuela.....we had to ride on a little boat all the way there and it was so much fun. I got so burnt that I looked like a lobster but it was worth it! Meeting all the wonderful people! They are really nice people there and Venezuela has the best ice cream...check out a 4D ice cream pace if you can!

It's the thing that you'll find on everybody's list... vistit the Angel Falls. Not just for the breathtaking beauty of the falls (as long as it's a clear day!) but for the Tepuis and surrounding area as well, the scenery is fantastic! I recommend everywhere that I went, but the Tepuis and Falls certainly stick in my mind the most... oh, and holding a crocadile! Where do I start...? We travelled all over, and saw a wide range of things. The flat lands at Los Llanos were incredible, we climbed one Pico El Torro in the Andes, went to the beach at Santa Fe and of course saw the Angel Falls. Best memories are definately galloping on a horse in the flat lands, and the sunsets at Santa Fe... as well as the falls of course... and playing Coconut Water Polo!

Take the canoe ride up the river to see Angel's fall. Leaves before dawn and it takes 4 hours, the dawn at the river uncovering the tepuyes is just magnificent. Then you have a 1 hour walk through the jungle up to a clear spot where you get a near view of the falls. The whole 2 1/2 days were awesome!

Go into the Delta Orinoco. I did back in 1995 and found it really interesting to see so many frogs and insects in their natural environment. We stayed at a camp run by a French guy who really knew the area and employed the local indians as guides. The local everyday people were some of the friendlist I've met.

As said above, go shopping at one of the flea markets, I always love barganing with the shop people. When I was there, about 10 little children surrounded me on the sidewalk, all trying to sell me candy. It isn't the prettiest memory, but the idea of kids having to sell chicklets at 6 years old stuck in my head for a while. It's the way they support their family if they can't go to school. The poverty situation is horrible, but there's poverty in every country, and we can't hide away from it, just try to improve it.

A trip to Angel Falls is a MUST. While I flew in a private plane for a day excursion to the Falls where we enjoyed hiking and a marvelous picnic, there are places for camping around the Falls for those who want to enjoy a more fulfilling experience of nature. The beauty of the Falls is absolutely stunning.A visit to a haciendas, one of Venezuela's plantations is also a MUST (if you have never seen one before). It is truly a rewarding experience to suck on a cocoa bean (the original form of chocolate) extracted from its outer shell which looks something like a young coconut. And while you can really enjoy some of the fresh produce while you are there, remember that it is forbidden to import fresh fruits or other vegetation into the States.

Go to Mérida and take El Teléferico to Pico Espejo, which is 15,633 feet above sea level...... traveling to this height, this places El Teléferico to be the highest running cablecar in the world. But it also runs the furthest, going 7.6 miles into the mountains. Going from the town to Pico Espejo takes roughly 1.5 hours, making stops at 4 'stations'.

eclark's General Tip

by eclark

During the programs presented by the children, to show us what they had done with what we taught them the previous year, the kids performed plays, music, skits and recitations of animal and environmental material. It was one of the most wonderful two hour periods of my professional life. The costumes, the enthusiasm and the genuine interest in the subject matter confirms something that someone said to me twenty five years ago, when I was a classroom teacher, 'A teacher will never know where his influence ends.'
