Anaconda Snake

by Schnorf

The anaconda, which is a water snake, typically grows to about 20 feet (6 meters) long, weighs several hundred pounds, and can measure more than 12 inches (30 centimeters) in diameter. The females are larger than the males. The anaconda kills with power, not poison, and capturing one requires at least two people and a lot of technique.

Canaima

by Schnorf

Canaima includes the uplands of the Gran Sabana and the eastern table mountains (tepuis) of the Roraima Range, as well as the sandstone plateau of Chimantá and Auyán-tepui and the north-western Canaima lowlands. It comprises Precambrian rocks which have been subjected to 600 million years of erosion to form a spectacular landscape. It is composed mainly of horizontal sandstone and lutite strata with inserts of igneous rocks (diorite dykes and colse). There are three disjunct physiographic units: undulating lowlands between 350 and 650m; the flat plateau of the Gran Sabana (800-1500m); and the tepui summits (2000-2700m). The summits reach 1000-2000m above the surrounding plateau and their surfaces are often scarred by gullies, canyons and sinkholes of several hundred metres depth. Water drains from the flat summits forming hundreds of waterfalls. The Río Caroní, with its many tributaries...

Angel Falls

by Schnorf

Serendipitous Discovery The Natives in Venezuela had known about the "Salto Angel" since the beginning of time. Then United States pilot Jimmie Angel was flying over the area in 1935 when he landed on the top of a lone mountain in search of gold. His plane got stuck in the boggy jungle on top of the mountain and he noticed a pretty impressive waterfall plunging thousands of feet down. He wasn't too happy about the 11 mile hike back to civilization, and his plane remained stuck and rusting upon the mountain as a monument to his discovery. Soon the whole world would know about the falls, which came to be known as Angel Falls, after the pilot who "discovered" them.

Orinoco River Delta

by Schnorf

"Unhalted by a dam anywhere on its 1,300-mile [2,092-kilometer] course, the Orinoco [shown above at its delta] floods annually and prodigiously. When the rainy Venezuelan 'winter' arrives, lasting from May through November, the river rises more than 40 feet [12 meters], drowning grazing lands miles from its low-water line."

Araya Peninsula

by Schnorf

Located on the northernmost tip of Venezuela, this ecoregion covers a peninsula surrounded on three sides by the Caribbean Sea. It has two arms: the arid landscapes and colorful salt lakes of Araya to the west and the mosaics of scrub and bamboo forests of Paria to the east. The ecoregion also includes Isla Margarita, Isla Cubagua, and Isla Coche, just north in the Caribbean Sea. Along the coast, sandy beaches are lined with fishing villages, resorts, coconut palms, and mangroves. The interior is composed of scrub desert, deciduous thorn woodland, pastures, and farmland.

Angel Falls and the weather

by Kentishlad

A trip to the Angel Falls is a must. But remember it is in rain forest - that means there is often rain and low cloud. If you are there for a while you should get a good view. However. if you are just going to the falls for a quick visit (e.g. on a fly-past) you might get a restricted view.

Guácharo Cave, Caripe

by maryellen50

The beautiful town of Caripe is the base to visit the Guácharo Cave, Venezuela's most famous and magnificent. Considered one of the most complete cave ecosystems on earth, incredible stalactites and stalagmites formations are still being sculpted by nature in a never-ending process. The cave houses an important colony of "Guácharos" or Oilbirds, the only nocturnal bird in the world that feeds on fruit. In order to protect the feeding grounds of this peculiar bird, 242 square miles around the cave in the Monagas and Sucre States were declared El Guácharo National Park in 1975.
