Puerto Colombia and Choroní

by AndreSTGT

Puerto Colombia on the coast of the beautiful Parque Nacional Henri Pittier was my first destination in Venezuela.Getting there by bus from Maracay is gorgeous and hair-raising. The narrow road goes straight through the wonderful and wild mountain scenery of the national park. It was a big surprise for me to find a real tourist resort (mostly Venezuelans) at the end of this road. From Puerto Colombia it's a ten minute walk to Playa Grande, a picture-perfect Caribbean beach, palm-fringed with white sand, where i pitched up my tent.A couple of kilometers inland from Puerto Colombia (45 min walk) is Choroní (pic, see travelogue), a beautiful and tranquil colonial village which is well worth a visit for its colorful houses and cobbled streets.

Gran Sabana

by AndreSTGT

Gran Sabana is, as the name implies, a large savannah in the country's south-east.Santa Elena, a small backwater near the Brazilian border, in this beautiful region is the starting point of the Roraima trek (see general tips).Apart from Roraima there are many other attractions around Santa Elena, such as Quebrada de Jaspe (see pic) and Balneario Soruapé, a great swimming spot with natural pools.A one-day tour of these places is usually included in the price of the Roraima trek, but it can also be organised through agencies in Santa Elena.

Jaji

by luiggi

Situated approximately 70 Km. northwest of Merida, the curvy road to Jaji offers many wonderful panoramic vistas across creeks, lakes, and waterfalls. The most picturesque architectural aspects of Jaji can be found around the town center, where restored whitewashed buildings form a dazzling backdrop for fountains and flowers.

San Rafael de Mucuchies

by luiggi

Fifty-two kilometres north-east of Merida, San Rafael de Mucuchies, the highest inhabited point in Venezuela at 3140 metres above sea level. At the northern end of town lies the chapel of stone dedicated to the Virgen de Coromoto, the work of Juan Felix Sanchez.

Colonia Tovar

by luiggi

La Colonia Tovar is approximately 60km from Caracas, it remained practically isolated for more than a century until a road leading to it was paved in 1963. The restricted access and rigid social mores meant that the inhabitants remained exclusively tied to their own culture (marriage, for instance, was prohibited unless to another member of the colony). Only in the 1940s was the Spanish language introduced. The town is a replica of a Black Forest village, with traditional architecture, markets and restaurants selling typical foods and beverages like home brewed beer, sauerkraut, wiener schnitzel, and strudel. Many Caraqueños travel here on weekends to purchase the wonderful vegetables, fruits, and flowers that are grown here.

CHORONI

by parsix

Once you get to Choroni you can find accomodation here or in the next village which is Puerto Colombia. Both have typical colonial houses, and archiquecture. There are pleanty of "Posadas" with prices for all type of budgets.

Los Nevados

by K1W1

A recommended trek from Merida is the trip to Los Nevados. It involves a trip up the teleferico to the stop just before the top and then a good walk over to the village. You can stay there in a family's house, and they will cook you dinner. The following morning you can either go back the way you came or take a 4x4 back down the side of the mountain to Merida. It is possible to do all of this independently, ie, without booking a tour.

A hidden secret : Parque Nacional Morrocoy, east of Coro, next to the city of Tucacas. It consists of dozens of islands, mostly unhabited, with clear waters allowing you to do good snorkelling or diving. We spotted several dolphins. >>> Picture = another hidden secret is the Reserve of Mochima <<<

Don't miss the colonnial district of EL HATILLO, in Caracas. It's got an old church and picturesque houses, besides lots of shops selling local craftwork, and good restaurants too. It's really a shame I don't have any pictures...

The city of Maracaibo. It's located on a large 'lake' and is generally considered an industrial city. However, the city has some beautiful landmarks, including cathedrals, museums, stately homes, and excellent restaurants.
