Canyoning (pic from www.arassari.com) by AndreSTGT Looking for the ultimate kick? Adrenaline rush guaranteed! Go canyoning in Mérida with Arassari Tours!!! Well, that's at least what i was led to believe when i read the comment book of the agency. But to be honest, i think the people who had written in this book were exaggerating. The tour was neither hardcore nor the ultimate kick. And yet, i did not regret paying 50$ for the day. It was a lot of fun to abseil from a 35m high waterfall, or using a super fast natural slide and jumping into narrow currents. All in all, this is a recommended day trip for people who want to enjoy the beautiful nature of the Andes in a different way than just hiking. Great views will stop you in your hiking tracks by lemondrop, 3 more photos The Mountainous Western region of Venezuela is ideal for hiking. Hiring a good guide for the duration will definitely enrich your experience. They can arrange various activities for you, such as horseback riding, mountain biking, and paragliding (see my sports category). They might take you to some out of the way places too. Our guide took us on a hike to a natural hot spring up in the mountains..it was awesome! (see my "off the beaten path" category). I arranged my guide through Lost World Adventures (see contacts below). She met and picked me up from Merida airport and was great from beginning to end of the Andean part of the trip.
Good, worn in hiking shoes, flashlight and replacement batteries. Spare socks, pants and shirt..in case you get wet. Light and heavy jacket, water.

Paragliding in the Andean area of Western Venezuela is a fantastic experience. My hiking guide arranged my tandem flight and we drove up the winding mountain road. After the silk chute is laid out behind and you are strapped in, you then wait for the right wind to come along. When the proper wind comes your pilot calls out for you to run! You are running off the end of a steep drop off the mountain. As soon as you think that you are running towards your death, the wind lifts you up in a thrilling swoop and you are airborn. This isn't the type of parachute that simply takes you down to the bottom. You lift upwards downwards, side to side around the mountain. It's not a terrifying sort of feeling, as in bunji jumping..it's a more peaceful, exhilarating sensation. The sound of the wind and sweeping views of the mountain, sky, valley and river below are really something. My words simply can't do it justice, you need to experience it for yourself. Take a look at the pics to give you some idea of how beautiful it really is..they were taking during the flight. Price should be around $50.
All the equipment you need is provided by the paraglider pilot. DO TAKE YOUR CAMERA!! I advise you to load up your camera with a new roll of film (if you use film), as changing rolls in mid flight is not easy (trust me). Gran Sabana with Roraima in the background by AndreSTGT First Day Most of the six hours we hiked were relatively flat, only the last hour was a steady, but not too steep ascent. The weather was fantastic so we had clear views at the impressive table mountain and it was great to observe how we got closer and closer. The whole stretch led through the gentle rolling hills of the Gran Sabana and the scenery was as gorgeous as the views. We spent the night in tents. Leave a Comment Theme: Hiking

Roraima steep face by AndreSTGT As easy as the previous day had been, as hard was the second day. The hour through savannah to the base camp was already quite strenuous, but the remaining three hours uphill to the summit were hardcore, along a ridge through dense vegetation, over roots and quarries. In return we were constantly rewarded with fantastic views on the vertical steep face or the endless savannah. The first thing we did on the summit was pitching up our tents in one of the few places where this was possible up there. In the afternoon we took a relaxed look around. The scenery here is absolutely unreal, and unique in the world. A dark rocky landscape with the weirdest formations (turtles, mushrooms) and little vegetation. The views from the 1000m high abyss over Gran Sabana was breathtakingly beautiful and compensated for the arduous ascent. Leave a Comment Theme: Hiking

Riding a turtle by AndreSTGT We spent the entire day on the summit, and it was the highlight of my entire trip. The moonscape with all the rock formations is so bizarre and unique that there's no way to describe it. But it was not only the landscape that was magnificent, the views over the other table mountains and the endless jungle of Guyana...it all seems like a dream to me now!!! Camp by AndreSTGT It was a six hour hike back to the first camp. The first two hours downhill to the base camp were very strenuous and also quite dangerous, the rest was a piece of cake. Leave a Comment Theme: Hiking

cast all day for the best bonefishing in the WORLD. sip on Polar and Regionales and cuba libres in between... the scenery is unbeatable. You can access guides for about $300 dollars a day or just go out and fish by yourself. This place is only going to get more and more popular so go soon if you want somewhat of a budget trip.
