Surfing in Venezuela's central north coast

by Nelven

For surfing on the mainland (not Margarita), Cuyagua is the place, Choroni (the Malecon area) comes second. To get to Cuyagua, go to the city of Maracay and from there take a bus to Ocumare de la Costa, and from there to the small town and beach of Cuyagua. If you can get a bus directly from Maracay to Cuyagua, great. At the beach on Cuyagua there are plenty of B&B, posadas, inns, etc, but you can also stay with the beach campers if you have a tent. Weekends are packed, weekdays are relaxed. If you are a surfer, I recommend contacting Venezuelan surfers through the local surf pages or once there, you will meet them and they will be more than happy to show you around and even lend you a board. There are also surfshops at Cuyagua that will help you a lot. If you read spanish, here is a little link on Cuyagua http://www.surfreportes.com/2007/03/cuyagua.html, anyway, check youtube and see...

Surfing - Place in Venezuela

by luis.ydler

Well, friend, when you mention North Coast you mean mainland? If so, you should be visiting a beach: Cuyagua. It is pretty famous for being the ideal place for surfing in the North Central coast of Venezuela. In order to get there, you should make it to Maracay in Aragua state, then go all the way up to Ocumare de la Costa. From there, you easily reach Cuyagua.

Trips to Angel Falls

by tampa_shawn

If you are on a lower budget and going to Angel Falls chances are you will be taking Tiuna tours. Most of these tours are booked through the city Ciudad Bolivar http://www.venezuelatuya.com/hoteles/mostrarhotel.htm?316,Tiuna_ToursMost of their tours are sold through resellers. I checked out quite a few companies and liked two (both resold Tiuna) 1) Adrenaline Adventures - two brothers Louise and Richardo run this company and they were so helpful and honest. They resell the tour to Angel Falls but run their own tours for Grande Sabana and Rio Cauro (among others). They will also arrange transportation to and from various cities...which is VERY useful and valuable I highly recommend them. http://www.adrenalinexpeditions.com/0414-8547696adrenalinexpeditons@hotmail.com 2) Total Adventures - did some great explanations and had several options - have a room in their office that you can use...

Orinoco here we come

by cochinjew

you are most welcome to look at the information on my pages on Venezuela. I particularly like being in the Orinoco delta. from Puerto Ordaz, one can get to Tucupita and from there arrange a boat ride to Curiapo. i have been there twice and enjoyed both times. there is a small hotel in curiapo.. orquidea. owned by a guyanese family, Gomez by name. their relatives in tucupita has a travel agency..if you can gethold of lobo tours in puerto ordaz, you can find delightful accomodations in the company of veteran venuzuelan travellers. Puerto Bolivar is interesting as a side trip. The trip into Roraima and all the way into Santa Elena de Uiren is nothing short of magnificent. Apart from PUerto Ordaz, all the other places are relatively safe. Fly to Puerto Ordaz from Caracas, saving time. Good Luck. I met and visited Warao indians in many of their homes ( I am a cultural anthropologist), there...

San Antonio del Táchira

by MalenaN

San Antonio del Táchira is a quite small town on the border to Colombia. It is on the highway between San Cristobal and Cúcuta so many people pass here every day. I arrived late in the afternoon, went to a hotel and then went out to eat. I didn’t find a lot of restaurants, but after walking some blocks I found a fast food chicken place down on Avenida Venezuela. There are to nice plazas in town where you can sit watching people. I also looked for the DIEX office, where you get the exit- and entry stamps, so I would know where to go the next morning. You get the stamps in your passport at the office in town and not at the border. Don’t miss it! San Antonio del Táchira is the shire town of Bolívar Municipality. In the municipality there are about 49 000 inhabitants. The average temperature is 26°C. The town San Antonio was founded in 1724 and at least once Simón Bolívar is said to have...

Watching the Pelicans

by amapola66

One of my simple but favourite pastimes while in Venezuela, is watching the pelicans fly around in formation, while lazing on those wonderful beaches. The brown pelican is about four feet in length and has a brown and grey body, a white head with a light brown crown. Apparently (You see, I have been reading about Pelicans). Its neck is dark brown during breeding season and young pelicans are all brown. The brown pelican has a very long gray bill with a large pouch of skin. Pelicans live in flock made up of males and females. When flying, they glide in a V formation with their necks folded against their shoulders. A nest can be built on the ground, in a tree, or in a bush. (I always wondered where they went at night!) These magnificant birds really amuse me ; )I actually took this Pelican pic in Aruba, an Dutch island just off the coast of Venezuela, at dawn. It took a few mornings of...

Visit Caracas

by amapola66

I have many relatives in Caracas. It is a very beautiful and youthful city with lots of art galleries, things to see and do, places to dance, restaurants of evry kind, hotels and places to shop. There is also, alot of poverty, which I find very upsetting when I go there. Thousands of poor people live without the basic essentials in the ramshackle barrios that surround the city and which can be very dangerous places, especially at night. I feel there should be no excuse in these modern times for such an enormous amount of people to exist in such a way. When I approach Caracas, I always get this little tingling in my tummy like it is somewhere I belong. It is truly beautiful, surrounded by mountains and ever changing skies. I have eaten some great food, especially Italian and of course, I have the added bonus of a huge and loving family there to greet me.The traffic is unbelievably bad -...

Trip to Wakajara

by Warao

Going into the Orinoco delta where the Warao Indians live. We took a 2 hour boat ride down a large channel of the river into the delta. We spent 2 days and 1 night in a Warao village living with the Indians. The area where we stayed is jungle. They speak some Spanish, but have their own language. This was a great experience and I enjoyed my stay with them. I have made friends and would like to return here sometime. Check 4 more photo's.
