CARACAS: COMPLEJO CULTURAL TERESA CARRENO

by swesn

This is a cultural centre between Parque Central and the Natural Science Museum. The large, grey building has a retro-feel and is not particularly attractive. But if you have nothing planned for the evening, suggest that you drop by here to check out what are the upcoming events. When I was there, there were concerts and plays. We showed up about 10 minutes before the start of the programme and managed to procure tickets. Many Venezuelans came very elegantly dressed.

CARACAS: PARQUE CENTRAL

by swesn

In the map, I thought Parque Central was a really huge park, with some greenery at least. Gosh, how wrong I was! It actually is a huge massive series of inter-connected buildings, very very grey, ugly and old. At the basement, there is a maze of shops and restaurants but I was highly amused by how RETRO this place looked. It was built in the 1960s and has two of the tallest towers in Venezuela. One of the towers, Torre Este, had a huge fire in October 2004 on the top handful of floors, and so, that part of the ‘park’ was a complete disaster when I was there, as workers closed up certain areas to restore the tower. I am sure it is restored now.The Museo de Teclado, Museo de Los Ninos (Children's Museum) and Museo de Arte Contemporaneo (Museum of Contemporary Art) are located here.

CARACAS: MURALS ALONG AVENIDA MEXICO

by swesn

I do not recall seeing this mentioned in the guidebook but to me, these murals are quite a delight!Along Avenida Mexico, after Parque Carabobo metro station, you will come across several murals on the wall. Some are caricatures of famous Venezuelan authors or poets. But the ones that I really like are further down. The cartoonist drew the history of South America, particularly of Venezuela, in a continuum of caricatures and various representative symbols. He started with when the Spanish conquistadores arrived; when the El Dorado (Gold Fever) hit them, creating a horrid part of the South American history as they tried to hunt for this mythical place, resulting in the deaths of thousands of native Indians; then mestizos were created with the unions of the Indians and the Europeans; slavery; evangelists preaching about Catholism to the natives; Simon Bolivar and his war that eventually...

CARACAS: COLONIAL CENTRE

by swesn

Interestingly, the centre of Caracas which is divided into squarish blocks (very common amongst planned cities of South America) has a unique feature. The CORNERS of these street intersections are NAMED. Meanwhile, the criss-crossing streets are NUMBERED with North (Norte), South (Sur), East (Este), West (Oeste). So, instead of saying, "See you at the corner of XXX and YYY", you say, "See you at Aurora"... which your friend then has to wreck the brain to recall that Aurora is at the corner of Norte 10 and Oeste 7.As you can imagine, m-a-n-y names are required and this exercise was soon wisely abandoned by the city-planners once out of the immediate city centre. Here, you can see the usual Cathedral, Plaza Bolivar and various other museums and churches. Pleasant enough for a stroll.

Quebrada de Jaspe

by MalenaN

The Jaspe waterfall is situated between San Francisco and Santa Elena. From the parking lot it is only a few hundred metres to walk along an easy path to the falls. The falls are not big but are famous for the beautiful red jasper rock beneath the waters.Returning to Santa Helena from Roraima we were a few who visited the waterfalls. It is nice to sit under the falling water and get a massage as it hit the body. Somebody was supposed to take my photo when I was under the waterfall but just as we came there the sky opened up and the rain poured down heavily. For us in bathing suits who anyway were going under the waterfall it didn’t matter, but everybody else ran to the forest for protection and the cameras had to be hidden in plastic bags.

Parque National Médanos de Coro

by MalenaN

Los Médanos is a national park with sand dunes northeast of Coro. They are covering an area of 80 sq km and you can be here seeing nothing but than sand. Some of the dunes are 30 metres and you can get the impression you are in the middle of a big desert. During the day it is very, very hot, so it is better to visit in late afternoon. I did, and to go here I took a taxi from the city centre for 5000 Bs. I visited a Saturday and there were quite a lot of people visiting, but most of them stayed near the entrance. At the entrance there are some restaurants and snack stalls.

Maracay

by MalenaN

I stayed one night in Maracay on my way to Puerto Colombia as I arrived after the buses between Maracay and Puerto Colombia had stopped running for the day. The next morning I had breakfast and then had a walk in the city before going on. I passed the cathedral, but it was locked and I went to Plaza Bolivar, which is the biggest square in Venezuela. I had expected to see a huge open square but there was a park with trees in the plaza.I think the city can be worth a short visit on the way to the coast and Henri Pittier National Park.Maracay is about 300 years old, but there are not many buildings left from the colonial times. The city is the centre in an important agricultural and industrial area and it is the capital of Aragua state. It is quite big with 400 000 inhabitants. The Venezuelan air force has got a base here.

Ciudad Bolívar

by MalenaN

Ciudad Bolívar is situated on the south bank of River Orinoco. The city was founded in 1764 at the narrowest point of the river, and was by then called Angostura. In 1846 the city was renamed to Ciudad Bolívar in honour of Simón Bolívar, the Liberator. He had come here and set up a base during the war. It was here the troops got prepared for the last battles of the war. Many tourists pass Ciudad Bolívar on their way to Canaima/Angel Falls or Santa Elena /Roraima without stopping to see the city. It is absolutely worth to stop here for a day or two and explore the Historical Centre, which is spreading out on the hill above River Orinoco. The colonial houses are painted in many different colours and it looks very charming. There are many different museums to explore, but as I visited on a Monday most of them were closed. Also take a stroll along the river.

An Island to yourself (sailboat part 6)

by lemondrop

In the Los Roques Islands there are many small islands that are uninhabited. The captain will take the small motorboat that is tied up to the sailbaot, and drop you off on one. You can spend an hour or two with your partner (or yourself) as king and queen of your very own piece of paradise.

Quibor and Tintorero

by atufft

Estado Lara is off-the-beaten-path for most first time visits to Venezuela, but locals and folks like myself are drawn to this dry desert agricultural landscape because of Quibor ceramics. This unique artist pueblo has much of offer the shopper of local crafts, but the ceramics are world-class and worth packing into ones luggage. Outside the capital of Barquisimeto is another village called Tintorero where colorful cotton hammocks and heavy blankets are made on handlooms.
