From Cumana to Maturin and Ciudad Guayana

by atufft

After completing the first part of the trip from Caracas to Cumana, described in the previous trip, a great inland adventure leads over the coastal mountains into Estado Monagas. A stop in Maturin is worthwhile. It's in this region where buying the hammock (see shopping tips) is advised. From Maturin to Ciudad Guyana is easier now. There's a brand new bridge across the Orinoco, or for more adventure, the ferry may still be possible.

Mochima and Cumana

by atufft

From Caracas to "El Oriente", in the east, are some of the world's best beaches. My personal favorites are at Mochima. There it is easy to enjoy the bay and hire a boat to local islands. Natural beach sand varies in color from white to red. Cumana is the largest city and capitol of Estado Sucre, and has plenty to do. The fortress and views of the Gulf of Curaicao in Cumana are an important part of this excusion along Venezuela's eastern shore of the Caribbean.

Caracas to Maracaibo Via Valencia and Coro

by atufft

It's a long day of driving from Caracas to Maracaibo, but the roads are good. Along the way, there are pleasant places to stop to eat, and for beach action west of the seaport of Puerto Cabello and in Estado Falcon. From Caracas to Valencia, the freeway winds through mountains to a broad valley and past Lago Valencia, the largest freshwater lake in Venezuela. From Puerto Cabello, the nation's primary seaport through to Estado Falcon, coconut palms trees line the highway, and the beach resorts are plentiful. Estado Falcon is a desert region as is the Peninsula de Paraguana, the state's most famous geographical feature. There is a region of dunes on the peninsula that is very photogenic. The highway is good and not busy along through Estado Falcon, but make sure your car can take the heat of the desert. At Maracaibo, the bridge, old colonial center, and dinner at the only revolving...

Road trip to Puerto Ayacucho

by atufft

Twice my wife and I have traveled to Puerto Ayacucho by car. We borrowed her brother's car, which was once her own, and drove the route from Valencia through El Sombrero, Chaguaramas, and Cabruta. At Cabruta, we took the ferry across the Orinoco river and stayed in Caicara, a city on the river with decent places to stay and good restaurants. The lonely highway through to Puerto Ayacucho was paved in the late 1980's and should remain servicable even in the rain. Puerto Ayacucho is the city furthest up the navigatable portion of the Orinoco, and so serves as a good base for exploration into the upper Orinoco and tributaries of this vast rainforested region. For those without their own car, bus transportation is available, and flights to Puerto Ayacucho are also regular for those without the luxury of time or durability for adventure. In any case, since gas is cheaper in Venezuela than...

Watch Hugo Chavez

by atufft

President Hugo Chavez is one of the most dynamic leaders in the world today, stirring up controversy both at home and abroad. Because of his radical alteration of virtually part of the Venezuelan government and economy, the middle class and wealthy Venezuelans fear and loath his rule, while to the poor Chavez is a hero. This is a travel website, but any visitor to Venezuela will want to keep watch on the newspapers and television to see what Hugo will do next. In 1992, we were staying in Altamira when then young officer Chavez attempted and failed to take over the government. We watched some commotion at the old airport in Caracas, but mostly I read about this aborted coupe in the newspapers. These images are from those papers. For more information about Hugo Chavez, check out Dictatorofthemonth.com 2005 and the more recently updated article in wikipedia. Chavez's own appearance is...

Cachamay and La Llovizna Parks

by atufft

Many visitors take the flight travel package to Canaima and Angel Falls, but I have yet to do this. Rather, we have simply driven around Venezuela, and Canaima is not easy to reach by car. Howevere, 5 kms from the confluence of the Caroni and Orinoco Rivers are two a rarely visited world-class parks devoted to the hundreds of tropical falls located there. Cachamay and La Llovizna are just inside Ciudad Guayana. These falls are huge! For more information go to my pages on Ciudad Guayana

Take the Bus to Merida

by atufft

After a couple of weeks of visiting with my wife's family, I usually get restless and want to go somewhere. Once, I took a bus at the Valencia terminal at 9pm, and arrive at about 7am in Merida. What a lovely town in the Andes Mountains! The contrast of Merida with the rest of this tropical paradise is amazing. In Merida, one can visit the trout farm, take a ride on the world's longest and highest gondola, or just hang out in this urbane and hip old colonial town. See my pages for Merida and plan for this trip. The bus ride is cheap and quite adequate in terms of scenic landscape appreciation.

Canaima and Angel Falls

by Maria_80

At least for me who travelled from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, this was a must. Angel Falls is something you can't really describe in words, so beautiful. And the journey to Angel Falls is an adventure :)I did the journey with Excursiones Kavac, I would recommend them to anyone.

Teleferico de Merida

by Bogi15

Wortth a visit, not only for the experience of being that high and enjoy the lack of oxigen, specially if start runing around and climbig places were you are not allowed to, but also to wath the locals how the dress themselves (at the base station was some 28 degrees, but all the Venezuelan had gloves, caps and scarfs on) also hoe they react to the sight of snow.If you plan to go there, be early. We got there at about 9:30 and they stop selling tickest at 10 o'clock. They have a limit of persons going up.

Sistema Teleferico

by jorgejuansanchez

This is the highest cable car in the world (4765 metres) and a real experience. There are several stages where you can get off and admire the Andes Mountains, or even have your lunch. It is not expensive at all (just 30.000 bolivares). It constitutes a must during your journey in Western Venezuela.During one hour you will go up from the station Barinitas, in Merida, until Pico Espejo, stopping in La Montana (2442 metres), La Aguada (3452 metres), and Loma Redonda (4045 metres). You will see the valley of the river Chama, then jungle and finally glaciers and the peak Bolivar (5007 metres), the highest in Venezuela.
