Relaxing in clear waters

by veegoozie

Beautiful cove on the north west coast of venezuela. La Cienaga. The mountain outlines a form that reminds me of Olive Oil from Popeye, big head, small boobs and long skirt. Maybe it was the rum that made me see this. The water is calm and tons of coral to explore underwater with many fishies to chase. The waters temperature was perfect and you could just sit in it all day and read a book and if you were smart you would bring rope and a raft and tie it up lay in it all day long feeling the gentle current underneath you rock you to sleep. Bring a big hat and a book and plenty of mosquito repellent eventhough they were not that bad. If you worry about this then preventive medicine would be to take Vitamin B prior to your visit.

Canaima Lagoon

by lemondrop

You will find yourself spending plenty of time at this incredibly scenic spot, especially if you're staying at Campamento Canaima, which is on it's shores. The indigenous Pemon people who work at the campamento live here, it's almost like a little town. They socialize, swim, play etc. here. It's nice to wander and watch them go about their business.

Salto Sapo (waterfall)

by lemondrop

You will surely visit Salto Sapo if you are staying at Campamento Canaima, as it is nearby. The waterfall is pretty impressive and you actually walk behind the water on a ledge. Be prepared, as you will be absolutely soaked, no matter what you wear when you go through. Make suer your camera is sealed in a plastic bag. The perspective from behind the waterfall is nice, and you CAN see beyond all the falling water. Be careful, some spots are very slippery through here.

Eating onboard (sailboat part 5)

by lemondrop

If you like seafood, you will be in heaven. The captain buys fish and lobster right from the local fishermen. He even catches some of the fish himself. You simply can't get it any fresher...from the sea, to the table. While we were sailing one day, the captain was dragging a fishing line. After getting a bite he was reeling it in and when the fish was skimming the top of the water...a barracuda bit it in half (see pic). It still ended up being part of our dinner that night, and was tasty too. Technically, I shared my dinner with a barracuda.

Inside the boat (sailboat part 4)

by lemondrop

Down below, where you will be sleeping, there are 2 bedrooms with bathrooms, seperated by a kitchen. The bedroom is of course cramped, but still comfortable. One really cool thing is a hatched window above the bed that you can open up and go right up on deck. I would wake up, open the hatch, climb on deck, and jump into the ocean first thing every morning...it's the best ! Also in the bedroom, there is a small bathroom, with toilet and handheld showerhead. It's all very liveable down there.

Sailing away(sailboat part3)

by lemondrop

When the winds are good and the boat is ready to start flying..hold on. This a real thrill, as the boat leans down toward the waters surface, and the spray hits you in the face. The crew does all the work, so hold on to something and enjoy the ride. Everything has to be secured, or it will tumble about as the boat leans in. The captain will only sail if you wish, but you would be crazy not to!

Los roques underwater (sailboat part 2)

by lemondrop

Right over the side of the sailboat and into the clear waters. That's all you need to do to enjoy the fish and corals. The boat will have your gear, so don't worry about bringing any. Here are some underwater photos that I took.

Staying on a sailboat in Los Roques Archipelago

by lemondrop

This is a real treat. I spent 4 days on a 35 foot sailboat owned and run by a really nice couple, who had their cool young son with them. They spend most of the time anchored to a spot, off of one of the islands. There is great snorkeling, as the water is crystal clear, with decent coral and colorful fish (see my Los Roques underwater tip). For info and pics of whats beneath the boat, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom etc., check my "inside the boat" tip. When the sail goes up, and the boat starts sailing, it's a great thrill (sailing away tip). For food, see the "eating on board" tip...etc....sorry I had to break it up so much!

Plane flight over Angel Falls

by lemondrop

If you want to see Angel Falls from a different perspective, you might consider a flight over...or more like right beside the falls. Servivensa has flights from the Canaima Airport, which is just a gravely runway next to a shack. These old planes are very rustic, and look like they have seen service in World War 2. I actually saw the pilot adjusting one of the propeller engines with a screwdriver and wooden ruler on the tarmac. The safety equipment on board consisted of a machete and length of rope. I can't vouch for the safety here!! The flight is fun, even if the clouds obscure the view. They really fly close beside the tepuys (mesas), and you almost think the wings will clip the side of them....kind of cool. Of course they fly over Angel Falls, but it's hit or miss, depending on cloud cover.
