If you want to buy souvenirs...

by tucha

If you want to buy souvenirs in Margarita Island (and do so, because they have wonderful things like the dolls, the coconuts and much more) do it, in te capital, Porlamar but at the the streets at the local vendors. Because they have much more variety than than in the shops (I only see souvenirs shops , in two places) and the prices are much, much cheaper.

When you arrive at the Venezuela International Airport. Be very cafeful with the unofficial Taxi cab. If possible use the official 'Black Car' (the black Ford Explorer) with official logo on the side. Get the ticket at the luggage claim area. You will see the Black Car on the ground floor area.

One way to avoid getting trapped is to have someone with you who speaks the language! One time at an Indian market I spent like $10 on a bead necklace that was only worth $3. So be careful, they will rip you off!

Not really a tourist trap...more advice... Shop about for deals to take you to Los Llanos or Angel Falls, different tour companies offer different deals... also check that you get a guide who can speak your language... we went through Guamanchi Tours in Merida to go to Los Llanos and up Pico El Torro, and their deal for Los Llanos had the option of White water rafting (which was great fun!). Angel falls is a harder one, just search about, and your best resource for knowlege is talk to people that have been there who you meet in hoatels... this is how we found out about the deal that we went on... recommendations are definately the best thing to go on (not always from the tour operator!).

Be Careful with men in street that are available to change money. DON'T DO IT.Go to a exchange house. This men always try give you less money. How they do it?: First they count the money. EVerything seems ok. Than you count it and you sees that there isn't all the money. Than the man count it again and confirms that reality. After that he gives you the money that are missing and you go home happy. What happened?: When he counts the money for the second time, he keep some money and you don't see it.

by Nijntje

The travelagents are more expensive than the local 'pirats'. The travelagents says: 'Don't go with Pirats'. The so called 'pirats' are much cheaper..and offer u a good trip. They usually come at the beach and offer u a good trip for a good price. Just do it !!!!!!! Don't be afraid.

When you coming from another country and going to other, just making a connecting fligth in Caracas you have to pay attention, because they tried to charge a friend of mine the departing tax from Venezuela,(US$50), even for a few hours in the airport.

Isla de la Margarita. It is...

Isla de la Margarita. It is touted as a wonderful, caribbean getaway. What we found were dirty hotels, filthy beaches and unfriendly people. Do your research before you go.We stayed in a popular, local hotel that all the people told us was a good place. The hotel staff didn't bother cleaning our room, bringing towels or soap and to make matters worse--didn't care that our continued requests for these items were ignored. Also, the cleanliness of the rooms is questionable from the start--careful if you have allergies--there is mildew everywhere. The beaches were overcrowded and extremely dirty. If you are scared of seeing a lot of thong bathing suits, this is not the place for you!Prices are unusually high. We didn't buy a single souvenir. A child's bathing suit cost over $25!

The moment you clear customs after getting your luggage at the airport you are immediately swarmed by a million taxi drivers, who unlike their American counterparts, actually want your business.. However, before you get into a cab you should always know the fare for your requrested trip as well as your final destination. Also once you have these confirmed you should repeat them to your driver as they may change their mind and try to take you somewhere else.
