Too cold on the night buses

by MalenaN

The buses in Venezuela are much too cold (the night buses). I had been warned about it but could not imagine how cold it actually was. For my first bus journey in Venezuela, with the night bus between Caracas and Ciudad Bolivar, I was dressed in long trousers, a warm sweater, socks in the sandals and a scarf. I very soon realised this was not enough and I was freezing cold (not just a little) during the whole journey. Many other people(who were prepared) had both jackets and blankets.I can't understand why they have such cold air-condition when it becomes unpleasant for the passengers. I heard of a tourist getting off in a small town in the middle of the night because he couldn’t stand the coldness. Take more clothes than you think you will need with you inside the bus!

Smoke covering the road

by Warao

At the end of the dry season, many of the fields in the open country are set on fire. This burns off the old dead vegetation, then when the rainy season starts, everything comes in green again. The smoke sometimes covers the road and you can't see. Be careful because you may not see where you are going. Just stop and wait for the wind to shift or the smoke to clear.

Parrot's make a nice pet

by Warao

Some people in Venezuela have a parrot for a pet. The one I am holding is gentle but a friend had one that was mean and would bite you. Be careful when holding one, because they have a very sharp beak. A parrot can take a chunk of out of your arm or hand very easily.

ATM machines/credit card fraud

by westcoastdog

In October-November we were in Venezuela and could not use our ATM cards to obtain the local currency. My friends were from Australia and I'm from the U.S. Also the couple from Melbourne used their credits a couple of times and when they returned home, someone in Venezuela used their credit card to run up thousands of dollars in charges. My suggestion is to take travel checks and cash.

Demonstrations - Stay away

by Warao

If you see tires laying across a road and on fire, this is a demonstration. Don't go near and get involved. Sometimes there can be violence. Just stay away for your safety. Turn around and go a different way.

Take the same precautions as in any big city

by maryellen50

There is really bad press about Venezuela at this point in tim with a destabilization campaign against the government of the actual president Hugo Chavez & intense polarization in the Venezuelan society. If you are outside of Caracas, you will not even be aware of these events, almost entirely concentrated in the capital city of Caracas.Althought there is a significant number of homicides registered in Venezuela weekly most occur in the shanty towns around the city and related to drugs or gang wars so the situation is not worse than in any other big cities in Latin America or United States. Always use legal taxis (they have yellow license plates, from the airport buy the ticket at the counter inside the terminal), contract the services of legal tour operators, don't show up too much jewelry, cameras etc in center of Caracas, don't go in areas where you have nothing to do anyway, shanty...

Failure to Reconfirm your tickets

by melosh

It is especially important to reconfirm your return tickets on Venezuelan airlines. Get a confirmation number even if it costs a few bucks service chargefrom a travel agent. You can also do this by phone. I never suffered from making this error but in four pleasure trips to Venezeula I met numerous people, some who had travelled extensively in Latin America, stuck without a seat because they did not take this requirement seriously. (The overbooking may be part of a plan because I saw alot of cash being passed quietly over the counter in a kind of surreptitious manner.)

Small planes and other travel.

by melosh

Considering flying in a small plane? Kick the tires, judge the plane and look at pilot's overall condition before you board. I guess I should have even checked the gas tanks. We were flying on double empty (both tanks reading empty) as we landed. Maybe there was no danger, but I clearly understood the pilot to tell the tower in Bolivar City in no uncertain terms that he could not go around the airport before landing.

Growing corruption-- get your passport stamped.

by melosh

Over four visits I observed what seemed to be a growing boldness and presence of corruption at the airport. Finally, on my last trip I was with a group of Boy Scouts. After we cleared immigration we noticed that one passport had not been stamped. We inquired but the officer said it was OK as we were a group. When we went to leave the very same officer tried to tell us that we would have to go back to Caracas and get the passport stamped for this boy to able to leave the country or give him some money. Well, I eventually convinced him that it would be better for all concerned if he just let us go as I could not give him anything in front of the scouts who were honored guests of Venezuela. The first lesson here is be sure your passport is stamped on entry. The second lesson might be to try to resist efforts to extort money with patience and persistance. But the most important lesson for...

It is dangerous...

by cucaracha

At the moment I only advice my friends to go to Venezuela if they go with a prearranged tour to a secluded place. No lonely travel, no let's go and find out, no wonder around, no hitchhiking, it is dangerous!!Right now Venezuela is going through a horrible political transition and there are no guaranties for any rights, abuse and anarchy are everyday events and there is no one that will give you a satisfactory solution to any abused committed against you.If you are there and there is a political rally or any big concentration of people just stay away, you will not know what to do if things get out of control! This picture is from a recent antigovernment protest and the law enforcement forces beat this protester, several people died this day, when she approached them unarmed to complaint about the treatment that the protesters were getting. The officers were later congratulated for their...
