If you think about driving in Caracas, think again. The traffic is horrible. The locale, if they think they can make it, they just just go for it. If not, they'll let the other party stop until they are clear...Red Light, Stop Sign, what, where..... also, crimes are extremely high, it is very dangerous to walk alone in downtown during the evening hours. Watchout.. The vultures are watching....

If you go to Margarita - beware of pickpockets, don't change money in the streets, stay out of slum areas unless you're with a trusted local. It can be dangerous for girls to travel alone. The crime rate is very high and some tourists have experienced horrific robberies. Don't smuggle drugs. The authorities show no mercy for drug trafficers.

Don't trust anyone. Including officials. Believe all warnings you read about crime. Bribes are very common but you need to know very well when one is being suggested; be very careful with this useful tool if you get in trouble.

Car hire... We didn't actually hire a car, but be warned that there are rumours that if you are invovled in an accident, both parties are locked up until the case is sorted out... don't know how true this is, but considering how cheap buses are...

Be careful when walking through muddy puddles, or where you sit down... one of the three of us (not me thank goodness!) came back with Mytate Lava Worms in her feet and bum... they caused a lot of grief and sleepless nights, and after two courses of medicine (which took us six weeks to get!) and being photographed by the hospital we took her to ('You don't get to see worms like that too often in Birmingham') ten weeks on she still has one alive and kicking in her bum cheek! Just be careful, but don't worry if you get them... they can be treated, but they are resiliant little buggers...

Take loads of insect reppelant & Malaria pills. Check out all rooms before checking in. Forget the bus service - it was almost non existant when we were there in 1995. This has got to be one of the most corrupt places on earth. Everyone in a uniform expects a bribe. Don't offer a bribe to any officials - you may end up getting arrested! Don't use or carry drugs - non nationals get much harsher treatment. Keep hold of your passport, even when showing it to officials - they have a habit of disapearing!

You may find that you will have a new friend(s) as soon as you arrived. Some people say to avoid people who approach you for help, so we did do the same. The capital, Caracas is considered unsafe in the evening, but we did not have any problems. Please check the departure tax since this has increased regurarly and can be in the region of EUR 50.

Venezuela has more than its...

Venezuela has more than its fare share of crime. The stark disparity of the have and have not is all too apparent. This can only lead to frustrations that result in crime. Please be extra-cautious in Caracas and in evaluating people who will offer themselves as a guide to you. While my experiences were absolutely terrific, stories abound of misfortune. But then again, if you are seeking to evade criminal prosecution in the States, Venezuela may be the right place for you. I have been informed that it continues to be difficult to be extradited from Venezuela to the States.

by eclark

Don't buy any wildlife or wildlife products while traveling in Venezuela, or elsewhere in the world. I was in Venezuela working to combat the illegal trade in wildlife, especially the sale of birds, primates and big cats as pets. Near San Carlos, is the Association for the Rescue of Fauna (ARFA), one of few officially sanctioned wildlife rescue centers in Venezuela. It will break your heart to see parrots, monkeys and many other types of birds, mammals, and reptiles in the cages. Most cannot be returned to the wild due to injuries or behavior problems. DON'T BE PART OF THE PROBLEM. DON'T BUY EXOTIC PETS THERE OR AT HOME. EVERY WILD ANIMAL BOUGHT FOR A PET, ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, CONTRIBUTES TO A SERIOUS THREAT TO SPECIES AND ECOSYSTEMS. GET A DOG OR A CAT!!!!

Don't be a 'rube'...imagine that you are traveling to NYC...same rules...don't be stupid! This is not the US of A! Be polite and learn some spanish! Don't be the ugly American tourist (I am an American, so don't give me any grief about this statement! You know what a bunch of jerks Americans can be abroad!)
