For those traveling to the Amazons, near the border between Venezuela and Brazil... be careful with Anacondas. These snakes can be extremely dangerous and fast enough to kill not only alligators... but also people. THey won't attack unless they are bothered... or starving... just be aware that scenes like this happen in real life and that these are not part of a any scary movie. Just watch your step and be smart... taking a picture of one of this beauty may be the second in which is determined whether you will stay alive or die as somebody elses lunch!!Regarding security... Venezuela is safer than many other South American countries. However, crime is not uncommon. Many windows are barred and some shops use security guards so keep money well hidden. A money belt that sits under clothes is a probably the best way to carry cash, passport etc. Split your money. Deposit large sums in a hotel...

VISA Information (as of...

VISA Information (as of 22/8/01)1. If staying for only one month AND you are continuing to Colombia after Venezuela, keep in mind the following:- If you are in the country for more than one month you'll have to pay Bs13,500 (US$18.60) exit tax. Try to keep under a month if you want to avoid paying this.2. If you are wanting to renew your VISA/Tourist Card for a further 3 months and you are in the Mérida/San Cristobal area, you don't have to leave the country to get a new one. Go to the border town of San Antonio (1hr from San Cristobal), obtain you exit stamp from the DIEX office located at Calle 7 with Carrera 9, go and have lunch, them come back and ask for an entry stamp. It doesn't matter if the same person attends you, there's no problem in doing this. You DON'T need to go to Colombia if you don't want to. If however, you do want to go into Colombia, they'll only stamp your...

for those people like me, that like to hit the road, without hotel reservations, Venezuela is not a safe place to do that, you're not going to find hotels or motels on the road in the same way that we have in the US, so be careful, and avoid being on the road when it's late!

Margarita Island has some...

by Annabella

Margarita Island has some good, inexpensive 'all inclusive resorts.' It is very much a place for couples. I was the only single (except for a handful of Brits on a group tour) out of several hundred people at the hotel and was very lonely. I met a few singles in town, but this is a very popular destination for couples, especially from Latin America and Spain (I was the only American in my hotel).

I don't know that this is exactly a danger or a warning, but if you are an American HOOKED on coffee like I am, you will find it impossible to buy a decent cup of coffee. The coffee was thick and syrupy and they add milk to it -- just to make it drinkable, I think. It didn't help much! The whole week we were there, I was suffering withdrawal and couldn't wait for a cup that was 'good to the last drop!' I strongly recommend you TAKE YOUR OWN COFFEE!

Be prepared to speak Spanish...

by kristink

Be prepared to speak Spanish and use the loca currency. We thought staying at a Sheraton there would surely be someone speaking English - we were wrong. We got by with our poor Spanish, pointing to things and using hand gestures but it was not easy.We arrived at the airport late in the evening and this was pretty nerve-wracking. It took awhile to get a cab and when one finally arrived we realized it was a regular car with a driver. It had been sent from the hotel so we felt OK but were still cautious.

Venezuela has changed...

by La_Gringa

Venezuela has changed dramatically since July 1999. The crime rate has escalated, the prices have escalated, the unemployement rate has escalated, and the Venezuelan people are stuggling which equals a personal safety factor. Do not believe tour reps who tell you that everything is fine. I have been going to Venezuela for 12 years and everything is not fine.
