You can take courses in Thai massage in a few locations. The most popular is Wat Po in Bangkok. There are others in Chiangmai, like the Old Chiangmai Hospital. I took a 6 week course at International Training Massage and liked it very much. Classes are from 1 to 6 weeks in length. Instruction is given in clear English but most of the staff speak very little of it. It was much more reasonably priced than Wat Po and the service more personal. However, it can get full during high tourist season.

doi suitep is the sacred wat of Chiang Mai: it's located about 40 minutes and 40 bahts away by shared jumbo. And once you get there you discover that your first impression is one of repulsion: stalls everywhere pushing you to buy their wares. Then you see the long sttep staircase.. your way to peace and quiet! Once you reach the top (breathless of course) it's like entering another dimension: it's a wonderful wat all shining and glittering of gold, with interesting frescos and niches with buddhas statues. It's a bit crowded but it's a quiet crowd, since Thai people come here to pray. There's also a terrace with some decent views over Chiang Mai and the surroundingcountryside. So yes, Doi Suitep is worth a half a day trip!

Sometimes I am glad I'm not too good at reading maps. After having stopped at the three kings monuments I made a mistake and took the wrong turn - here I saw a small stupa, then an entrance to a big building - and so I decided to go have a look. What a wonderful surprise: it was the old provincial hall which had been converted into an Art and Culture Hall. I went inside - there was an exhibit of black and white photos, with no english explanation. The photos were not too imteresting or impressive to me, but the way they had displayed them - very creative, with plenty of silk all about the exhibition halls, was truly spectacular.

City activites and events: Muay Thai Training Camp
A short distance out of the city centre takes u here where many expats or even just visitors come for muay thai training. I'm not sure if they charge for training but I guess they do. People train here to join competitions for money. The camp has rooms as well as bathroom with cold shower. One of my mates stayed here an entire year surviving only on money won in competitions. His visa was extended by going for day trips across the border to Burma(Myanmar) and Laos!

City activites and events: Museum of World Insects
This low key museum is in the house of an elderly couple that are as interesting to visit with as the contents of their private collection are to see. We met Khun Rampa, who together with her husband, both insect enthusiasts, collected and now maintain the contents of their museum. It seems they began working for the American military conducting taxonomy and biology surveys of mosquito populations in Southeast Asia. As US interests in the region increased in the 50s and 60s, concerns regarding malaria increased. Besides mosquitoes, there are many other kinds of insects and fungi, rocks, etc., that are fascinating. The collection is extensive and consumes a lot of space. But the best part of this visit is the owners themselves (we only met Khun Rampa) to whom insects are a labour of love. The place looks closed, but when you ring the doorbell, they will open their home to you. At first we thought the admission wasn't cheap, but when we started the tour we knew it was worth it. This couple has so many stories to tell. They are located on Sirimungkalajan Road across the road from the mouth of Sirimungkalajan Soi 5. 'World Insect Museum' is written in the cement in front of the gate.
