Setouchi Art Triennale
Established in 2010 by the inhabitants of the islands in the Seto Inland Sea as a way to revitalize their aging communities through tourism. It's a spectacular event with nearly 200 works from some of the best modern artists in Japan and around the world. The islanders also create art for the festival. The art is scattered around 12 islands, along with Takamatsu Port and Uno Port and is separated into three seasons: Spring (Mar 20 - Apr 17), Summer (July 18 - Sept 4) and Autumn (Oct 8 - Nov 6). The ports and the islands of Inujima, Naoshima, Teshima, Oshima, Shodoshima, Ogijima, and Megijima are participating throughout the entire festival while Shamijima is only participating in the Spring session and the islands of Ibukijima, Takamijima, Awashima, and Honjima are only participating in the Autumn session.
The works range from interactive art to thought-provoking art to art that is just fun and interesting to look at! Some of the 'art' is even edible. There are also special art events by performance artists. The islands themselves are also relaxing and enjoyable. It's a lot of fun island-hopping to see the art and explore the islands!
Passports can be purchased for 5000 yen which generally saves money over paying to see each work of art. The passport can also be used to get discounts at a variety of tourist sites in Okayama and Kagawa Prefectures. Check the website during the festival for a list of participating locations.
