Kgalagadi Lodge: Just outside the park...

The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park offers chalets, camp sites, desert tents and cabins but at only 5 km before the entrance gate there is this new lodge which offers self catering chalets (which are heated and the park can be very, veeeeeery cold in winter, July included), with electricity, tea/coffee facilities in the room, tv and and private bathroom.

There is also a restaurant and a grocery store.

Price goes from 50 to 70 US dollars for two people per unit according to the different grading: business, standard or luxury.

Don't miss the sunrise on the dune in front of your chalet!

And the staff is really friendly and helpful!!

Gharagab: Wilderness Camp

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park has five wilderness camps: they are "not" fenced, are secluded with only four cabins each and there is an assistant on duty.

The cabin has 2 single beds with linen, a bathroom with w/c and shower and hot water, an equipped kitchen (cutlery, crockery and so on) with gas fridge and freezer, and braai facilities (the so famous grill of South Africa) on a deck.overlooking a water hole (which is not very near but with a very nice view) and solar power for lights (which means you have light but no socket to recharge camera batteries or whatever).

The cabin is not heated.

I visited only three of the so-called wilderness camps out of six (five wildernness camps plus a tented camp) and the view here is really amazing!

It's the nearest wilderness camp at 1,5 hour drive from the entrance gate.

Kalahari Tented Camp: Wilderness Camp

This camp offers more luxury accommodation: desert tents; it's "not" fenced and any tent overlooks the water hole.

The tent is equipped with cutlery, crockery, linen, fridge and braai (the so famous grill of South Africa) but it's not heated. Anyway you have hot water and gas for cooking and a lighting through solar energy (which means you have light but no socket to recharge camera batteries or whatever)

It's a so called wilderness camp (no fence and only your accommodation among nature and wildlife) but it's only 3 km away from a small shop and a filling station.

Twee Rivieren: Traditional Rest Camp

Twee Rivieren is the rest camp at the entrance of the park and here are the administrative headquarters.

As all three traditional rest camps, you can choose among family cottages, chalets and camp sites.

It's also the only camp with a restaurant. As all three camps, it has a shop and a filling station.

This is the only camp with 24 hours electricity and cell phone reception (When I asked, I was said that the MTN phone service has the best reception and it's anyway still very slow but working!)

Nosob Rest Camp: Nossob, The Best Camp Ground In the Kalahari

Nosob Restcamp is one of three camps in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. It is located on the central part of the park on the boarder of Botswana.
Accomodation here includes, camping, huts, as well as spacious well equipped cottages with kitchens.

The camping facilities are quite nice as expected in South Africa. The have:
braiis
bath and showers
dish washing area
laundry
outsided lighting

The camp is just outside the main fence into the park. There are jackals storming the camp grounds so you must watch your food and keep your tent zipped up.

It gets quite cold here. Bring plenty of blankets if you are camping or have the appropriate sleeping bag rating. It was -6 Centigrade in July.

Nice location on the Nosob River.
The most unique quality about this restcamp is the fantastic blind over the Nosob River. It is lit during the night and is accessible 24 hours a day.
Small store
Petrol available

Night Drives are Available.
At the time of Writing day walks were no longer available

Mata Mata: Real Desert Feel at Mata Mata

Mata Mata Restcamp is one of three camps in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. It is located on the West side of the park on the boarder of Namibia (no boarder crossing).
Accomodation here includes, camping, huts, as well as spacious well equipped cottages with kitchens.

The hut (really a trailor) we stayed in was nice but power was turned off at 10pm. You need a torch until 5 am if you need to use the bathroom. And there is no heat during these times as well. Really our hut was an icebox. Make sure you have plenty of blankets no matter if you are a camping or staying in a hut or cottage.

The camping facilities are quite nice as expected in South Africa. The have:
braiis
bath and showers
dish washing area
laundry
outsided lighting

The camp is just outside the main fence into the park. I didn't see or here of any nuisance animals like jackals storming the camp grounds.

Again, it gets quite cold here. Bring plenty of blankets if you are camping or have the appropriate sleeping bag rating. It was -6 Centigrade in July.

Nice location on the Auob River.
Blind next to camp ground but it's a little to close for animals.
Small store
Petrol available
No access into Namibia (for now)

At the time of Writing day walks were no longer available

It is located on the South side of the reserve 270 km North from Upington.

Accomodation here includes, camping, huts, cottages, as well as spacious well equipped cottages with kitchens.

The camping facilities are quite nice as expected in South Africa. The have:
braiis
bath and showers
dish washing area
laundry
outsided lighting

The camp is just outside the main fence into the park. I didn't see or here of any nuisance animals like jackals storming the camp grounds.

It gets quite cold here as the camp is low in a dry river bed.
