Good location, bad aircon policy

Good (3.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on June 9, 2016

I stay at the Excel Tokyu often as it has good sized rooms, good value for money and a good location. It is a good base for exploring Tokyo. Directly across the street from the metro it is quick to get to several of the major areas including Tokyo station, Asakusa, Shibuya and Shinjuku.

As a larger hotel with a lot of rooms (400+) it has a good number of helpful and friendly staff to help guests. Check-in/check-out, luggage storage are all fine. The rooms are mostly a good size and some recent room renovations (upgraded showers in the double rooms for example) are a nice improvement.

The building is, however, showing its age. The air-con is a central system and like other Japanese hotels has a policy of heating during "winter" and cooling during "summer". Unfortunately my most recent stays were in spring when it was just in "circulation" mode. That means that in a room with no opening windows it was 26C and made it very unpleasant and impossible to have a good sleep. (The windows on one side of the building open, the other side, sauna.)

The other thing to note is that some booking sites have non-smoking as a request, not a guarantee. With Japan still a smoking country, smoking rooms are pretty bad.

Excellent location, not that great for sleeping

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on May 13, 2007

I chose this hotel more for the price than anything, as Tokyo hotels can run quite high. The location turned out to be an excellent one, just across from Akasaka-Mitsuke station which is on two major metro lines, making it very easy to get to the popular areas in Tokyo without any hassle. The staff are very nice and helpful. The rooms have blackout shades, which came in handy as the sun came up about an hour and half earlier than I'm used to at home.

There are many restaurants and konbini nearby (7-11 is in the hotel building). Just walk down the street on the opposite side of Akasaka-Mitsuke and you'll find just about everything including a pub or two (skip the Mermaid and walk a few more blocks down to the Hobgoblin - better atmosphere and selection of food). Citibank is very close but there's a post office nearby as well, so you have options for easily withdrawing money at a global ATM.

The drawbacks were the bed and the pillows. Guests are provided with a rice pillow and a foam one. Neither were all that great for sleeping, but at least you'll have an extra for propping up your sore feet after a full day of walking. The bed was pretty hard. We really only slept because we were exhausted from jet lag and sightseeing. One other thing to mention; the room has it's own climate control, however you won't get any A/C unless it has been turned on for the whole building (the fan will just run otherwise).
