A strange mix

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on November 5, 2015

Wiang Inn is a large hotel right next door to the night market, so very well situated. It gets a lot of things right, but others seem so dated. More on that later, but there are a lot of positives. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the rooms are big if a little oddly shaped (to be fair it adds more space. There is a desk and chairs, a TV with English news and a film channel, a minibar and tea making facilities. The bed is very soft, which I'm not fond of. The shower is large and good. Breakfast is a buffet with Asian and western options and is generally good, though the juices are about 72% sugar and the bread is stale. There is a small pool, and the wifi is alright.

It's a little odd then that the decor, while clean, is faded (the long corridors feel a little like the Overlook Hotel in the Shining), that the electric point by the yellowing kettle has a sticker telling you it doesn't work (in at least 2 rooms), that the kettle doesn't turn itself off, that you seem to have to turn the TV on to use some of the power points, that they used display items to make drinks at the bar... Just found out as my friend came to get me that the bell is broken too, producing an entertaining noise. Drinks in the bar are very expensive for Chiang Rai.

These are all minor niggles, but more annoying was that the box controlling the lights malfunctioned at 4am, making a lot of beeps and turning some lights on. Overall it was a good stay, but with a bit of an overhaul this could be a really good hotel.

Unique Quality: The location is really good.

Directions: Near the night market.

Hotel In Nice Location

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)

When travelling I have noticed three main topics with hotels and they are location, location and location. This hotel has all of those benefits. The hotel is located in the heart of Chiang Rai about a five minute walk from the night market are. There is an outdoor swimming pool and dining options. As normal in Thai areas, the rooms are quite large and the staff is more than friendly and polite. Free WiFi.

The town is just around, the restaurants and bars behind the corner.

In the Center of Chiang Rai

Good (3.0 of 5.0 stars)

In the entrance hall there is somewhere a sign, explaining that the name is a mixture of languages meaning something like "Rest for the weary traveller" and was suggested so by the ministry of tourism...

Well, anyway. It was another hotel we had on our tour.
It must have some contacts with a lot of tour operators, because there were quite a lot of tourists there (not only westeners, but also Japanese and Thai).

Unique Quality: Very big complex with astounding long floors.
Clean Rooms, a lot of them don´t really have a view (except you call the next house a view).

Located close to a main road, but a little set back so you won´t hear anything of the noise.
Some minutes walk to the Night Market of Chiang Rai (yes, they also have one).

Big Buffets, many people.

chiang rai

Chiang Rai is the place that - accommodation-wise - was a big let down. One wonderful guesthouse I had set my eyes onto, was full.. the others i found were definitely shabby... Same for hotels.. Eventually I gave in and chose a pretty one - very sterile

Unique Quality: Nothing special - ur usual fancy-ish hotel. But it was conveniently located near the bus station.

Directions: just around the corner from the night market - past the clock "statue"
