Casa Cubuy Ecolodge
casa cabuy... never again!
the place is run by a mother and her son. looks like they are overwhelmed with running the place. i called to ask for directions and the son, matthew, was very rude. i came while they were still "cleaning" and called to say i was returning really late. the owner said she'd leave the front door unlocked and the key in the room. i arrived and all doors were locked, no choice but to rich the noisy bell. we were pointed to the direction of the room which was downstairs beside the laundry room, i discovered the fan wasn't working but i could not find her. the comforter was wet, there were bugs in the room and the chain bolt was broken. hey had run out of coffee and tea for breakfast and i just had to grab this from the kitchen later. the room was about $100/nt and i do expect a lot more than to stay in a dump!
Unique Quality: the view was excellent.
Directions: driving up the mountain, it's close to the end of the road
Any person who has browsed the Lonely Planet Guide for Puerto Rico and wants to visit the rain forest has read about Casa Cabuy. In short, the guide is right on target. Do it! Visit the website and make your reservations.
On the website, there is detailed, thorough, and accurate driving directions to this ecolodge. You won't have any problem getting there in you car. I recommend getting an early start if you are leaving from San Juan. (San Juan can have terrible traffic and Puerto Rican driving directions are not detailed or specific. When you arrive, you can park in the small parking lot.
The ecolodge has several rooms that overlook the rainforest. Don't worry about bug repelent. You can sleep with the windows open because the coquis eat the mosquito larvae.
The owners are phenomenal people. I had a problem with my travel companion and they were very understanding and sane about his ridiculous demands. Breakfast is generally included with the price. I met wonderful people at the breakfast table. Exactly the travelers that ecolodge/ bed and breakfast attract. Breakfast included a cheese omlete with bread, juices, and coffee one day.
On property, short hiking trails that run into two rivers and a small natural pool.
Honor bar which includes bottled water, refreshments, and beer and wine.
Internet wi-fi that may or be not functioning all the time.
You can pay to use their phone if neccesary.
About 30-40 minute drive to the visitor center of El Yunque.
Coqui lullaby included with price.
Recycle bins available.
On request, they can make to-go lunches given in insulated luch bags.
use of board games. and a variety of books at no charge.
Warnings: Dominoe's pizza doesn't deliver in the rain forest! Don't expect every thing to be like the city. Relax
Unique Quality: Excellent atmosphere and location.
