Driving by

by written on April 9, 2009

We did not stay here - we just saw it driving by. I thought it was interesting looking. When I looked it up, I found that this hotel originally opened on October 10, 1942. Its design was inspired by the ocean liner SS Normandie. The hotel's roof sign is one of the two signs that adorned the top deck of the Normandie but were removed from it during an early refitting. It is a fine example of what came to be known as the Streamline Moderne architecture style. The Normandie Hotel has been declared a national historic site was added to the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Interior Department's Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service on August 29, 1980

Unfortunately it is now permanently closed. It went bankrupt. In August 8, 2013 the hotel was purchased by Ben Medetsky and Jack Polatsek of Interra Capital Group, who are working on plans for redevelopment of the hotel.

Unique Quality: After being closed and abandoned in the 1960s, the hotel was restored in the early 1990s. After storm-related damages from Hurricane Georges (1998) were repaired, the hotel remained in business until 2004, when a renovation project commenced. In early 2005, the 173-room hotel reopened after its refurbishing, however it was closed once again sometime after 2008 due to an ongoing modernization project.

Terrible (1.0 of 5.0 stars)

This hotel has a lot of unfinished details that make it an uncomfortable stay. We heard loud banging sounds (pipes?) at random times throughout the day and night. Our friends stayed in 2 other rooms: one room smelled like sewage. None of the rooms had all the details (e.g., paint, bathroom renovation, mirrors) complete. Continental breakfast was poor and exorbitantly priced. Concierge service was terrible: we never received the welcome package for the wedding we attended until we asked everyone at the hotel about it for 2 days. There were loud dance parties every night until midnight - 1pm. Front desk staff appeared not to care about their customers and sometimes were altogether absent. The only good thing about this hotel was the cleaning staff: they did an excellent job.

Great Boutique Hotel!

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on January 14, 2008

Considered one of the best examples of Art Deco architecture in San Juan, the Normandie Hotel has spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel is decorated in a calming color palette with accents of ocean blue, reflecting the view beyond. Rooms are large and also well decorated and guests can relax in the sun room, swim in the outdoor pool, work out in the fitness center and pamper themselves with a treatment in the Ocean View Spa. Cru, the on-site Italian restaurant, features fusion cuisine of seafood and Italian classics. The Atrium Coffee Bar serves light meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner and N-Lounge serves a wide selection of appetizers and refreshing beverages in a very trendy atmosphere.

With reasonable prices and a great atmosphere, this hotel comes highly reccomended for those spending a couple nights in San Juan. The hotel is also walking distance to Old San Juan.

Unique Quality: The N-Lounge is very cool - overlooking the ocean

Noisy

Terrible (1.0 of 5.0 stars)

We checked in on a Thursday after traveling all day. We were tired and looking forward to a relaxing evening and getting some sleep. We were surprised to find out that the hotel was hosting a party in the atrium right ouside our door. They played disco and club music so loud the walls shook. We could not hear our tv or even talk to eachother let alone get any sleep. When I went to complain at the front desk they offered me ear plugs. When I asked how they could be so inconsiderate of their guests the manager just kept saying "I understand". The party lasted till 1:00 in the morning and the music only got louder and louder as the night went on.

Unique Quality: The hotel is old and quirky. The room layout wastes a lot of space and our view was of the parking lot. The pool is okay but I expected much more for the money we spent.

Directions: Within walking distance of Old San Juan

We stayed at the Normandie...

by written on August 24, 2002

We stayed at the Normandie which may not be for everyone. It is an elegant older hotel with nice amenities but rather formal and low key. The pool was nice but the ocean did not look very inviting-almost dirty. It may have been the time because most people were in and having a great time searching for some sea horses that wer around the area.
Ours was not too expensive because it was a deal which I think you can find if you look.

Directions: It is very close to Old San Juan- in fact on the road to the old city.
