Cheap And Comfy

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on March 31, 2013

This hotel should not be confused with the Ibis Brugge Centrum, a more expensive and probably higher-standard hotel nearby.
Ibis Budget Brugge Centrum Station is a very modern and quite nice hotel for those of you who don't need much more than a place to sleep, but are too old (or unwilling) to sleep in a youth hostel. Rooms are 49 Euros a night during the week, and 59 Euros on the weekend. Unfortunately, this excludes the breakfast, which, at another 7.50 Euros per person comes quite expensive. While the breakfast buffet looked welcoming, we always decided against it and walked a few metres to the cafes next to the train station to get some good quality sandwiches or the like.
The rooms are, as said above, very modern and very small. The available space, however, is very well used. There is a shower, a toilet, a sink and a little table, but no wardrobe so that you will have to live out of your suitcase. TV and wi-fi are available in every room. What I didn't like was the fact that you could not open the window but had to rely on the air-condition, and that the toilet door was not lockable. Furthermore, the shower is not in an extra room but within the hotel room, so that when you come with a friend instead of a partner you might miss the necessary privacy.
On the pro side, the hotel is very close to both the centre (10 minutes on foot) and the train station (3 minutes). There is plenty of parking for 3.50 Euros per day just in front of the house, and there are a lot of cafes just next door. On the contra side, the hotel is very hard to find as there are no signs on the main roads anywhere. The address, Marie Popelienplantsoen, is the square in front of the hotel which, however, is not directly accessible from street level. When you come by car, you should park it on the first level of the multi-storey car park next to the train station. You will then see a hotel sign between the two large buildings. When you come by train, leave the train station and walk up the stairs to your right. There is a SATURN electronics superstore which you have to pass. Turn right and walk up another set of stairs immediately after the store, and the hotel is directly in front of you.

Directions: next to the train station

Clean, comfortable, inexpensive

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on August 7, 2012

I stayed here for 4 nights in early August 2012.

It's next to the Bruges train station, so it served as an excellent base for me because I also took the train to Brussels and Gent--when I got back, I didn't have a long walk to my hotel.

Rooms are accessed via a door code. Mine was squeaky clean and in great shape. They're very modern and conceptually not dissimilar to some sort of capsule hotel in that they make an efficient use of space.

The toilet is in a little closet, and the shower is in the room (with frosted glass), so it only works for singles or people who know each other well. It has a pump with combination shampoo/shower gel. The shower head lights up--as far as I can tell, to indicate pressure and temperature.

Even though I stayed alone, I had a queen bed and a bunk above me. The bed was a bit hard but was otherwise fine. It had digital light controls over the top, so you could turn on individual bed lights, the room light, or a nightlight from bed. I wouldn't have minded somewhere I could sit properly and set my drink down, but you can only expect so much for a budget hotel.

Breakfast is not included, and I didn't pay to eat it, so I can't review that. I wish they'd included in-room coffee. That's my only notable beef with the room. Even just a minimal service of a couple packs of coffee and tea would be fine.

Unique Quality: It's probably the cheapest hotel in Bruges (it shows up that way on rankings, at least) and is next to the train station, making it convenient for traveling around.

Directions: When you walk out of the train station (towards the center of town), turn right and go up the escalators or stairs there and keep heading that way until you see the hotel (go up again to reach the ground floor).
