Good value 4* hotel in the heart of Duisburg

Good (3.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on October 1, 2016

Emma and I stayed at the 4* Wyndham Duisburger Hof Hotel for 2 nights during a weekend break in Duisburg in August 2016.

We booked our stay through www.expedia.co.uk and paid 43 GBP per night for a Standard Double room with no breakfast included. We were offered a special rate of €11 (instead of €16) per person per day for breakfast when we checked in, but opted against it.

As this was a promotional, non-cancellable and non-refundable rate, we paid in full at the time of booking.

Location

The Wyndham Duisburger Hof Hotel is located in the centre of the city, opposite the “Theater Duisburg” building and just a 5 minute walk from the central railway station. We arrived in Duisburg on a train from Düsseldorf Airport; a journey time of just 8 minutes (€5.70 per person).

Immediately outside the hotel is the City Palais shopping mall and a two minute walk brings you to the main pedestrianised shopping street of Königstrasse and the König-Heinrich-Platz U-Bahn station. From this station we could easily visit the Tiger & Turtle Magic Mountain (line 903) and Duisburg Zoo (line 901).

In the opposite direction, the city’s Inner Harbour (Innenhafen) - with a selection of waterside restaurants - can be reached on foot in around 10 minutes.

Bedroom

We stayed in a different room on each of the two nights of our stay.

Our first night was spent in the non-refurbished room #203. It was spacious and well-furnished. As a non-refurbished room it was showing a few signs of aging - a slightly frayed carpet, dated furniture and the odd bit of paintwork needed - but it was fine...in all respects but one; the temperature. This room had no air-conditioning. The large window could be opened fully and an oscillating electric fan was provided, but with outdoor temperatures topping 30 Celsius, the room was uncomfortably hot. We slept on top of the bed covers, with the fan on its highest setting and the window fully open, but it was still a hot and restless night. To further compound matters, the heated towel rail in the bathroom couldn’t be turned off, generating yet more heat. We reported the problem to the receptionist and, although the hotel was unable to solve the heated towel rail issue, they were more than happy to relocate us to a refurbished room (with air-con) for the second night of our stay.

Our move to room #156 was smoothly handled. We left our luggage behind reception in the morning, spent the day out and about, and returned late at night to be given key cards for our new room (where our luggage was already waiting for us).

Both rooms were more than adequately furnished for our short stay, with large wardrobes, bedside cabinets, writing desks, armchairs and mini fridges. There were plenty of lamps and electrical sockets for recharging devices overnight.

The large flat screen TV picked up a little over 20 channels; all German with no English-language news.

Free wi-fi was available throughout the hotel. You need to obtain a unique login name and password from reception for each individual device that you wish to use. They are happy to hand out as many as you need. The connection was fine in both rooms and was more than quick enough for our limited requirements.

The refurbished room was noticeably more modern in appearance than the non-refurbished room (and featured an impressive nighttime photo of Duisburg above the bed), but it was also a little less spacious.

The air-con in the refurbished room was very effective and we got a great night’s sleep.

The beds were very comfortable, with soft pillows and individual duvets (always a bonus for someone whose wife tends to steal the shared duvet!).

Both rooms featured clean, modern, spacious bathrooms. The first room included a shower over a bathtub, while the second room included a more modern walk-in shower cubicle. The shower pressure got a big thumbs up from Emma (who tends to pay more attention to such things than I do!).

Fresh towels and a few rudimentary toiletries (soap and wall-mounted shower gel dispensers) were provided.

A good value option right in the heart of Duisburg, conveniently located close to the train station and the city’s main shopping and dining venues. Modern, spacious rooms, free wi-fi throughout and helpful staff. We’d stay there again if we ever returned to Duisburg - especially for the price we paid. Recommended!
