Venetian monastery turned boutique hotel

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on October 16, 2014

This is really a tale of two (or even three) rooms. I chose the Veneto as I was staying a week in Rethymno with my mum, who has some mobility problems, and so we wanted somewhere that would be nice to lounge about in if we weren't out every day. The building itself absolutely fit the bill - an old stone construction with plentiful architectural features and fountains.

I wasn't too impressed with my first room, simply because it had floor-level windows only which meant there was little light. That would have been fine if I'd only been staying a night or two, but given the week stop I asked to move the incredibly helpful staff moved me onto the first floor next to my mum, who had a lovely airy room with a balcony over the hotel's courtyard. The new room was fantastic! Spacious and light, and, best of all, with its own cactus-filled terrace which was perfect for relaxing with a Mythos from the minibar.

All the rooms are very clean and facilities are good. We paid for the breakfast each morning - it was basic, but at EUR 6 it was more than adequate. Local pastries, cakes, fruit, yoghurt, etc.

The hotel is known as much for its restaurant as its rooms, and I have to say it's a very atmospheric place to eat. We didn't - despite guests getting a 10% discount - simply because it seemed a shame not to go out and explore, but I certainly would if I go back. Tables are in the hotel's peaceful courtyard (the same courtyard rooms with balconies overlook, although there is no noise late at night as the restaurant closes around 11).

One flaw was the lack of outside spaces to relax (if you don't have a private terrace!) since this is reserved for dining. The staff would certainly have no issue with guests sitting out, but there is often bustling about as they get ready for the next meal. A minor issue, however.

A real plus is the location, right in the heart of the old town and brilliant for exploring the alleyways. Despite where it is, the hotel is not noisy.

I would definitely return to the Veneto, as it was a real pleasure to stay in such a well maintained historic building.
