friendly youth hostel in a good location.

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on November 4, 2007

i have stayed a few times at the youth hostel in lisbon and liked it because of the good location and the friendly staff.
the hostel has a nice little bar too that is often lively at night.
the rooms are your typical hostel rooms.
basic but ok.

Unique Quality: the staff there is above average when it comes to being helpful to the visitors.

Directions: near marques de pombal.

Youth Hostel Lisabon (Center)

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on July 14, 2007

Generally satisfied.

Lockers are free but don't forget to bring your own lock.
Internet is not free, it's price is double comparing to city's internet cafes.

Although it is huge, the hostel has no kitchen and fridge for travelers, so I wouldn't recommend it for hard-core backpackers.

Staying Cheap in Lisbon

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on November 26, 2003

As much as the luxury of a fancy Pousada may appeal, really all I need from accommodation is that it is clean, has a decent bed, and hot water. Hostels have an extra plus for me as a single traveller: I get to meet other travellers from all around the world.

This hostel isn't the Hilton, but at 12 euro 50 (including breakfast) it wasn't ever going to be. But the beds were comfy, breakfast was quite decent, the staff were delightful, helpful and accommodating.

I was lucky enough to get great room-mates too. They put up with my snoring, and we even ended up going out to a Fado bar together, and on the last morning of my stay taking a flying visit together to Belem for pastries.

The whole team were just so friendly and helpful; offering advice on what to see and even tracking down an after hours chemist for me. What can I say.... in how many hotels would you sit up till 6am drinking Sangria and talking philosophy with the staff?

Unique Quality: 5 floors of rooms, most rooms had 2 bunks (4 beds) and a storage cupboard. Good firm mattresses. Pillows, sheets and blankets supplied (make your own bed). If you forget a padlock, Lockers are available for 1.50 a day. Curtains nice and heavy. Showers with plenty of hot water.

Breakfast (included in price) was simple; two bread rolls, butter, jam, either a slice of ham or cheese, tea/coffee, cereal and a choice of a boiled egg or tub of yoghurt.

TV with a vast range of stations in the front room. Internet access (1 euro for 15 min), a bar (good prices too but don't try the pizza) and living room (A bit bare, but a quiet space to escape to). They have a bookshelf filled with an extremely eclectic range of books in multiple languages that you can borrow if you pay a deposit.

It is really easy to get to by public transport. It may not be flash and fancy, but it was a great place to stay and meant I could spend my money on other things!

Directions: Airport bus (91) stops right around the corner: just tell the bus driver where you want to go. Train stop "Picoas" is literally on the same street. 10 minutes walk from Marques de Pombal (large landmark and starting point for most tour buses).
