Bargain for short or long stay.

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on May 15, 2016

This is a two star hotel, it used to be the old railway company hotel at Exeter St Davids station..so the building is old but modernised. Rooms are basic and clean. The outside appearance is very scruffy and in need of decoration . At Breakfast there is a choice, i had the full english breakfast [ bacon, sausage, fried egg, tomato, mushrooms, hash browns and toast.] My single room was small comprised of single bed, bedside table, wardrobe, table ,stool, wall tv, hairdryer, electric fan, luggage stand and kettle with tea and coffee. The price was £49. including breakfast., in May 2016. There is a public bar on the ground floor. This hotel is basic . It is at the St Davids rail station square. There is a car park in front of station. Bus letter H goes from front of station to city centre in 5 minutes.regular- Iwould say the city centre is about a 15 minute walk, ..- I used this hotel as a base to visit Devon by bus and train.Nearby is a new Premier Inn.

Unique Quality: Basic,- Clean,- Bargain.

Directions: Turn left at St Davids rail station, then 150 meters.

Functional Rather Than Palatial

Good (3.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on June 26, 2006

This hotel would never be on anyone's list of "Best Hotels in Town" but it does have its advantages, charmless though they may be.

The hotel itself doesn't even attempt to claim a place in the "destination" catagory but if you need an inexpensive bed for the night in Exeter and everywhere else is full (or too pricey) then The Great Western can usually be booked even at the last minute.

Rooms are a bit scruffy and basic, though are immaculately clean, but there is a all-pervading cooking smell in the rambling corridors. The en-suite bathrooms are tiny corner additions and in every room I have stayed in have a shower rather than a bath but the water is hot and shower pressure OK.

Unique Quality: The two main advantages of the hotel are that:

1. It's a short walk from St David's railway station.

and

2. It does have a very good selection of reasonably-priced beer!

Directions: to your left as you leave the station
