The Village: In nearby Brompton
This is a newly renovated (2012) hotel in Brompton which is 2 miles east of Northallerton. One of the best hotels I have stayed in and the standard achieved by the owners surprised me as the rates to stay here are so reasonable - £50 per room per night which includes a full English breakfast.
The rooms are in a separate building to the main building and built around the large car park. They are plain but tasteful and of a good size although some do not have a window (could be a problem in the summer) and some only have a shower and no bath. The beds are comfortable.
The main building has a large bar area with an open log fire and a two tier restaurant - the breakfasts were substantial and we also ate here one night (see separate restaurant review).
Brompton is a very nice village and there are regular buses to Northallerton through the day if you do not have a car.
Highly recommended.
The staff must be praised for their devotion and care to customer service - nothing is too much trouble from the time you arrive to when you depart.
This is a new venture for the new owners and they deserve to do well. If you choose this hotel DO NOT use a booking service but contact the hotel directly for a good deal.
We stayed here on May 10 - 13, 2012.

White Rose Hotel: Great overnighter for a work trip
I was working in the Northallerton area for a couple of days and didn't fancy driving back and forth between there and home in York, so picked the White Rose Hotel for an overnighter. It's half a mile from the A1, very convenient for the business traveller, but unlike those soulless chain hotels or motel-like places you usually have to put up with if you're working away and on a tight budget, this was more like staying in the village pub. In fact, it is the village pub, with a modern bedroom extension built on the back. Sure, the rooms need a refurb, but the bar and dining areas were really nice, the food was excellent, and above all the staff very friendly and professionally attentive. There was a very nice feel about the place. I thought it was very good value, and I would definitely stay there again if I was in the area.
Friendly atmosphere of a village pub, great service, excellent food, nice bar.

Golden Lion Hotel: The towns major hotel
This is a comfortable hotel in the town enjoying a commanding position at the head of Northallerton's famous High Street, The Golden Lion is the ideal retreat for guests visiting the area for business or pleasure.

There are twenty-five en suite bedrooms, each offering a full range of facilities. As well as the Lion brasserie with an interesting menu and a healthy selection of ales, wines and spirits, guests can also dine in the restaurant.
Unfortunately there are no ground floor rooms and no lift.
Non residents can also call in for meals or coffee as we did one Saturday morning in May 2012. Plush surroundings and a good range of teas and coffees with scones, teacakes, biscuits etc.
See also my restaurant review.
An old coaching inn that has some character about it.
The hotel featured in one of my favourite films - The Way to the Stars - made in 1945 many scenes were filmed at this hotel and I have included a still from the film below.
